A garage, across the park from us, has just sold for £100,000.... The new owners have pulled it down and are building a two story house in the space!

    No way!
It must only be big enough for hobbits!...stiull, I suppose even Hobbits have a right to buy!:rotfl:

I live in a different Hertfordshire new town. Garages here do go for between £9.5 to £12k when sold, but at the same time, houses go for £10k more with a garage. Swings and roundabouts. And if you live in a Hertfordshire new town, lets face it, swings and roundabouts are an integral part of our landscape!

Some of the new town housing here has covenants that have to be lifted to split the different parts of a property, before you even get to the deeds. May be more expense than its worth, but worth asking several agents their opinions.

I guess it depends whether you want organic illegal workers or are happy with factory farmed ones.

I'd go for renting too. Cheap and quick, no legal hassles, plus you get to keep the garage. I can't see there being a booming market for garages in most areas...not sure where you'd advertise it either...

The issue with garage en blocs is that they are usually tiny - i.e. you can't fit a modern car in it.

We are in the process of buying a house with a garage en bloc - if one of the neighbouring garages offered to sell so that we could make it a decent size, we would consider paying £8-£10k. Anything that stops OH's car stuff being in the house is worth it's weight in gold to me!!

Unfortunately, we aren't buying in Herts!
I have had many Light Bulb Moments. The trouble is someone keeps turning the bulb off :o
