Insurance cover?
Hi
I was wondering if someone could answer a simple question-sorry for being thick!
We have a car insurance fully comp, insurance in my OH name, with me as named driver.
My son in law (age 30) who also has his own car insured fully comp (nothing to do with us) would like to borrow our car as it's larger & seats can come out, to fetch some furniture.
Would he be covered by either his insurance (or ours) to drive our car 3rd party only just do this this as a one off?
Or does it depend what is in the small print of his or our policies?
I don't mind just the 3rd party cover while he uses the vehicle-as it's not worth that much anyway.
Or would I have to add him as a named driver onto our policy-although this is just a one off-we've had the car years and he has nevered had the need to borrow it before.
Thank you

You would need to satisfy yourself that he is insured under his insurance ( the onus is on you or your other half that he has the minimum cover ) read his certificate and policy document - or add him to your policy for the day.0 -
You need him to check his policy carefully. Time was, pretty much any fully comp policy would cover you 3rd party to drive "any car not owned by you and not hired by you". These days more and more insurance policies are withdrawing this, so that you're NOT automatically covered to drive someone else's car. Some still cover you, but a lot don't.
If his policy doesn't cover him, phone up your insurers and ask about adding him as a named driver for a day ( or a week, some companies will only do it for a week at a minimum ). I did exactly this some time ago - a friend of mine wanted to borrow my car to lug some furniture around. It cost me £20 to add him for a week - and that came with the benefit that he was covered fully comp. Even though you say you're not particularly bothered about him being fully comp, you'll probably find it's not a lot to get him covered for a day or a week.0 -
I'm going through renewing & was assured my fully comp with business would include third party with the owner's consent, but simpler by far to phone, check & if necessary pay for the extra day/week.
Please do not assume it comes as standard as the cost of being wrong doesn't bear thinking of.0 -
The certificate will say if the driving other cars clause is included. I've just checked mine (they live in my wallet) - Direct line includes it. Third party cover is fine but what happens i he causes an accident, and your car is written off, the policy wiil pay or the third party but you will be out a car.
It would probably cost peanuts to get him covered on your policy.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Thank you all, I'll ask him to check his insurance tonight, and if there is doubt -muggins will add him for a day/week to our policy.
Thought rules may have changed from the day that you were covered to drive any car 3rd party if you paid full comp on your vehicle.
Thank you guys/girls x:beer::j0 -

Rules havent changed, just policies amended.
You really need to check his certificate AND policy document for the exclusions, yes there will be exclusions.0 -
Yep, used to be a common wheeze, buy the cheapest thing to insure and park it up and then buy something you really wanted and put that in a family members name and drive using your DOC cover which never mentioned about having the other car insured.
You just needed 1 days cover to tax it.
If you add them to your insurance dont forget they can affect your no claims. Are they a safe driver?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
