20 year old Talk Talk account suddenly on my CR!?

Options
Hi everyone, first time post, ive long been keeping half eye on my credit file just to see where things are up to, and nothings ever been amiss. That is until this year where last week i login to my "clearscore" app (equifax) to find, to my shock, that there is suddenly a talktalk account listed under my telecomms accounts. It goes without saying that i have never had a talktalk account, i have never owned a property with a landline and have only ever had mobile accounts with EE, orange and vodafone.

The account was opened in 2002 (when i was 18) and has only recently gone into arrears which now stands at £32.

What the heck is going on and what can i do?

Many thanks!

  • You need to call Talk Talk customer service and ask them about the account. They've almost certainly got you mixed up with someone else.

When you click on the account and view the details, is the address listed as any address you've lived at? If no, I think they've mixed you up with someone else. If yes, it might be identity theft, but that seems unlikely as the thief will have done only one very unexciting thing with the info (i.e. scarper with £32 of Talk Talk's money after playing the long, long, long game).
  • Is 2002 really 20 years ago?

It doesn't feel like more than 14. I must be getting old. :)
  • So update on this is...

I cant pass security because nothing matches my details. The phone number i apparently owe money for is not my phone number.

The customer service people in india have told me there is nothing they can do to help. Apparently they understand my issue (they dont) and there is nothing i can do.

I cant close the account, i cant pay the account, i cant dispute the account.

This means it will continue to screw my credit and eventually i guess default and ruin 6 years of my life. How can this be allowed to happen?

Write/type a letter to TT, maybe try the ceo too.

Before you try that, speak to Equifax and tell them the account isn't yours.

Does the incorrect entry appear on your credit files with Experian and Noddle (should check both) ?

    complain again

    (1) letter stating the account isn't yours and that you will be taking them to the ombudsman and ICO if they refuse to deal with your complaint and remove the account.

    (2) letter before claim saying that unless removed you will be suing Talk-Talk for breach of Data Protection Act and defamation.

What happens if I'm not satisfied?

If you're not satisfied with our initial response to your complaint, please ask to speak to a manager. If a manager is not available immediately, they will try to contact you within 2 working days.

If you are still not satisfied after speaking to a manager, you may ask the manager to escalate your complaint to our CEO's office. Please give the manager the opportunity to resolve your complaint first before contacting the CEO's office. You can also send your complaint directly by post to the address below. The CEO's office try to respond to every complaint received within 10 working days of receipt. You will be assigned a dedicated person who will own your complaint and keep you fully updated.

Head of Complaints - CEO's Office
    TalkTalk Group
    P.O. Box 344, Unit 19, Southampton, SO30 2NP

If you are still not satisfied after speaking with the CEO's office you can either:

Ask the telecommunications ombudsman, Ombudsman Service: Communications to independently review your complaint.

Please remember that the ombudsman will not accept cases that are less than 8 weeks old unless you have received a deadlock letter from the CEO's office, which means there is nothing further we can do to resolve your complaint. You can contact the ombudsman using these details:

    Web: https://www.ombudsman-services.org/communications.html

    Phone: 0845 050 1614

    Textphone: 0845 051 1513

    Email: enquiries@os-communications.org
Submit your complaint to the European Commission’s Online Dispute Resolution Platform at the following address: http://ec.europa.eu/consumers/odr/. This website sets out further details about the ODR platform and how it works.

Call Equifax, they should investigate it on your behalf, they did for me me when I had 2 talk talk accounts on my CR and had only signed up for 1.

TalkTalk are peddling out of date information.

Those premium rate 0845 lines were changed to cheaper 0300 numbers several years ago.
