Surely the "move" to Birmingham is more just the precursor for the selling off of the high street branches. London will remain as the HSBC global HQ. Birmingham will be the HQ for the newly re-formed Midland bank (or First Direct, whatever they decide to re-brand with eventually).

HSBC have no interest in being a high street retail bank in the UK (despite trying to persuade people otherwise) and it will likely be disposed of within a matter of years. Probably single digit years.

    HSBC UK. http://news.sky.com/story/1642951/hsbc-to-begin-rebranding-uk-branch-network

No Midland bank, I think that's a better name.

There is money to be made from retail.

Yeah I know they have done that for now - But long term the re-brand and sell-off will be back on the table.

The only reason they have done this at the moment is because currently it is not attractive for a buyer, or indeed the right environment to sell.

I suspect they will spend the next few years re-building the retail bank to try and put it in a more salable state before the sell-off comes.

Corporate HSBC consists of little more than a couple of hundred people. Events of HK and China have most likely had a bearing on the outcome. Along with the softening of the bank levy .

Hey, Stewey. You didn't fancy a move to Hong Kong then?

Not me mate! I'm staying put, and so are the rest of you. I Can't stand !!!!!! food.

You do realise that Stuart Gulliver spent most of his life in Hong Kong? I wouldn't be so foolish to assume he's racist about them, regardless of how tongue-in-cheek your comment was.

Your racist comment aside, Hong Kong has a fair amount of British/Western food being a former UK colony...

:rotfl:Please explain how it's racist. You appear not to know the meaning of the word, or you've extended its use to cover something else.
  • Didn't do Malky Mackay or Dave Whelan much good though did it?
