Nationwide Flexplus account

I know some people on here aren't fans of these types of accounts.

Currently overhauling my finances and trying to save a few pounds here and there. My monthly savings are currently up to around £35 and still some room for improvement.

Currently, I pay £15.50 per month for Co-Op Privilege Premier (old account)

That gives me:

Worldwide Travel Insurance - I usually go on foreign city breaks/holidays at least 2-3 times per year. I have been on one holiday so far in 2016 and have 2 European city breaks coming up.

RAC Breakdown cover - I have used this service several times over the last few years.

Phone Insurance - Having once lost a brand new smart phone I like to keep my phones insured.

Gadget insurance - never claimed though it is supposed to offer worldwide accidental loss, theft and damage protection of any product on the policy. Not sure if the policy is of any benefit as I have never used it.

Anyway thinking about saving £5.50 per month and opening a Nationwide Flexplus which gives similar cover bar the gadget insurance for £10 per month.

Anyone rate the nationwide account?

  • I suggest you try getting this account because it will give you £5.50 savings a month. I think you are the sort of person that would get excellent value from the Nationwide Flex Plus Account. If you want to see the cost of the travel insurance, car breakdown service and insurance for your mobile phone have a look at the likey costs. Then it will show you the value. I have a Nationwide Flex Direct Account. It paid 5% interest for 12 months. I keep it so I can do mortgage overpayments.
  • Fee free cash withdrawals abroad. May be a charge made by the foreign bank.:T

What Nationwide used to provide and boast about on the FlexAccount until they copped out.

Sounds good for your circumstances. It offers Extended Warranty rather than Gadget Protection, but as you haven't used it, you don't need it. The other insurances all have an equivalent on the Flex Plus.

It pays 3% interest on up to £2,500 so your effective monthly fee could be as low as £4.00 from April (if I correctly remember the maximum gross interest figure.)

I used to have the account and had no issues with it. I decided not to upgrade my phone and downgraded as I hadn't used the other insurances and had nothing eligible for the Extended Warranty. I'll definitely be getting it back again should I upgrade to another expensive smartphone.

Thanks everyone, seems like the account will be value for money for me and give me £5.50 saving each month.

In terms of the mobile phone insurance it states that monthly contract and pay as you go phones are covered. Does that include sim only deals (12 month contract) and a phones purchased separately?

Reason I ask, is that my 24 month phone contract ends next month. I am (more than likely) going to take out a 12 month sim only deal and purchase a new smart phone separate to the sim.

Do you really travel worldwide and have an expensive phone that is worth insuring? How much does it cost to replace and and is there any excess to pay on your insurance?

EU tranve insurance is free with Nationwide Flexaccount.
    Standalone full breakdown assistance is £42, i.e. £3.50 p.m.

Where do you get the £42 for full breakdown assistance? I have gone through the AA, RAC and Green Flag websites and like for like cover is more expensive than £42. Is there a comparison site for breakdown cover?

Insurance yes I think it is worth it through the bank account. As an example 2015 I did 3 international trips 2 in the EU and one outside of the EU. In 2014 I did 12 European trips. This year 2016 I have been away for 1 week in the Eu so far, got 2 European city trips booked and 1 international trip for later in the year (deposit already paid).

Mobile phone currently I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 though I was going to buy an S6 next month when I finish on this contract. I once lost (fell out of my coat pocket while running for public transport) a smart phone only a few weeks in to a new 2 year contract a few years ago the insurance covered me for the unauthorised calls that someone made in the few hours between me losing it and getting to my destination where I could report it lost to the police and inform the contract provider. I had a new phone delivered within a couple of days. I know insurance is always a choice of insuring the potential risk but as I have claimed once I am inclined to keep the cover.

As an example of the break down cover.

RAC on their website is showing

Roadside,Home Start and Onward Travel as a one of payment of £129.99 or £13.20 per month.

It's definitely worth it if you need the family travel insurance (which includes winter sports) and European breakdown - these alone would usually cost about £120 a year. Then you get the mobile and free cash withdrawals as an added bonus. Plus you get half the cost back in interest if you keep £2500 in it.

Only snag might be if you've got pre-existing medical conditions - you'll likely have to pay quite a bit extra even for stuff which isn't particularly serious or likely to cause a claim, I think you need to declare anything you get repeat prescriptions for for instance.

Thanks, I think the account makes sense and as its a saving on my current monthly fee I am happy to apply. Just a shame Nationwide don't offer the £100 switching fee other than for referrals etc. I believe speaking with the nationwide advisor that the account has no minimum monthly pay in either so i don't have to use it as my main account.

Thankfully, I have no pre-existing medical conditions and definitely nothing that I require repeat prescriptions for.
  • Anyone know if the family worldwide travel insurance covers non package holidays? I can see it mentions end supply failure, is that sufficient or do I also need Safi?
    Thanks
