My Vodafone deal runs out on March 11th, if I switch to another company sim free, do I have to ask for my pack code, give notice, then on the 11th port it over and the Vodafone will be cancelled?

Yes, get PAC (not PAC code) ASAP.
It lasts for 30 days.
Give it to the new network a few days before it expires. Porting will terminate the old contract.

Notice isn't needed if you get a PAC, but you must to use the PAC; otherwise the contract goes on.
