Also, don't dismiss comics. Marvel are still producing monthly editions of (e.g.) Spiderman, X-Men, Wolverine, The Hulk etc etc.0

I second the Jennings books perhaps look for the older traditional books such as Dr Dolittle ( nothing like the ghastly films) & mary poppins wizard of oz & sequels. All quite different to the films & very readable....there was a series about brothers having amazing adventures I think they were Hal & Roger & called things like whale adventure by Willard price. Also the hardy boys, Nancy drew.....Norman hunters professor branestawm again nothing like the Harry hill tv shows.......Lurking in a galaxy far far away...0

Just make it clear to your son that it's absolutely fine to stop reading a book if you're not really into it (as you can always return to it later) and let him try lots of different series. I think it took me several goes at The Hobbit and The Little White Horse which I'd been given quite young.
I absolutely loved Tintin (still do); they are very readable and there are lots of different settings (eg Destination Moon/In America if he's especially into space/cowboys & Indians). Was never keen on Asterix, but they were very popular with boys at school.
Not sure if they're still in print, but my brother and I loved The Three Investigators, about a gang of boys investigating crime in California in the 50s. Similarly thrilling were the Willard Price Adventure books; a series of improbable stories that involved two brothers (who never seemed to be at school) having larks in the Amazon/Arctic/jungle or wherever. They are an EYESORES!!!!0 -
I love The Three Investigators!! I've got about 25 of them and still read them quite often (I'm nearly 40

+1 for your local library. In Lancashire a child can have up to 20 books at a time & never get fines. (Ours has a sort of till chit of all the books you have out which helps get them back!)
If you can get a librarian to advise, you will be getting a formidable ally!
For books that are no longer in print, or easily available, it may be worth getting an ebook reader (that you like, naturally) that you happen to have books he's intrigued by upon. A dash of confidence with torrent sites & you should be able to acquire a splendid library of out-of-copyright reading - enjoy!0 -
Asterix and TunTin books, Neil Gaiman's 'Fortunately the Milk' (he's probably a bit young for the Graveyard Book and Coraline just yet)
Do you have a local indepenet bookshop? Mine is verygoos, the staff are really helpful, much more so than big chains.
Do you still read to him? Advianced reading skills are great, but I think there is a apoint where they can ead well but it is still quite an efort, and they may enjoy being read to as they can releax into the story more. Also, it allows you to explain anythin thye are not clear about.
try 'The Queens Nose', Nicolas Fisk's 'Grinny' and 'You remember me' , maybe some of the Jacqueline Wilson's aimed at younger readers.
He might enjoy the 'My naughty Little Sister' books,
Chris Riddell's Ada Goth series
Philip Reeve and Sarah MacIntyre have done either 3 or 4 books together - Pugs of the Frozen North is the moset recent, I think. He won't find them dificult but they are fun.
He might like Kipling's 'Just So' storiesAll posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)0
