Good books for competent 6 yr old reader

My DS loves reading but finding it hard to keep up with him! He's read loads of Roald Dahl and Enid Bylton. At the moment he is reading Harry Potter but keeps losing interest. Perhaps still a long for him. He likes the hobbit at the moment and Star Wars. He has outgrown all of the Horrid Henry type books. Any good suggestions? He is a free reader at school now so no longer reading the banded reading books. He can choose from school library or a book from home so would like to get a selection for him

He sounds very advanced indeed. You must be very proud of him.:)
The problem you have is that although he may have reading skills beyond his age, he's still a 6 year old in terms of interests and maturity so I definitely wouldn't push him to read books that are beyond his years in that sense. Why not let him choose? He doesn't need to be pushing forward just let him enjoy using his skills.
For anyone reading whose 6 year old hasn't grown out of Horrid Henry, I saw them in Aldi yesterday for £1. They had loads of titles and that's a real bargain.0 -
Why not take him to the local library and let him choose a selection for himself. Here they let children have 10 books at a time, if your library is similar he'll be able to choose a good variety and will hopefully find a series he likes.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0

perhaps he might enjoy reading a selection of non fiction books or maybe horrible histories although some of the content can be gruesomeolympic challenge starting 7/1/07:j0

Lloyd Alexander, Narnia, Land of Green Ginger, Diana Wynne Jones, E NesbitBut a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.

Non fiction books (depending on his interests, space, dinosaurs, animals etc), Beast Quest books, How to train your dragon books. Best suggestion would be take him to a library or Waterstones and spend some time looking at the books until he finds something that interests him. Both my boys have high reading ages compared to their actual age and I found it difficult to find books with suitable content for them to read as they got older, hope you find something that interests him
. Also try looking at The Book People if looking to buy some as they sell sets at a decent price. Chocolate always makes me feel better!0 -
Moomins are a good set of books.“All shall be well, and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well.”0

I remember this dilemma well.
Waterstones/library staff were next to useless as they couldn't reconcile the high reading level with the emotional age.
We ended up with horrible histories, dinosaur cove, Jack stalwart, Paddington, winnie pooh, Mr men, d ick king smith, the entire scope of Enid blyton, narnia and lots and lots of trips to the library!Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?

Anyhony Horowitz does some good books for children and David Walliams has gone down well with a few of my class. I second the recommendation for the Book People, I buy end of year presents on there for my class and it works out to about a pound per book.
Don't overlook Michael Rosen either!0
