Had a quick look at this. Lots of reports. Seems to be a problem from updates issued in January. KB3124262 in particular...

    1. Download wushowhide from Microsoft. This allows users to manually block unwanted updates. Especially useful for blocking hardware device updates, but also works for flaky "enhancement" updates.

    2. Perform a System Restore to before 01-31-2016 when KB3124262 downloaded and installed. (Make sure System Restore is enabled on your computer because Windows 10 may have it shut off by default. Control Panel>System>System Protection>System Restore. TURN IT ON)

3- When the computer restarts open wushowhide, see the update listed there and check it not to be downloaded.
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.
  • completed a System Restore and it worked after spending hours trying other suggested solutions.Thank you grumpycap .Cortana and Search the web boxes are back. You need to patient as it took over an hour to complete. The only problem seems to be Open Office is not working I downloaded the new version but for some reason it did not take. Open Office 4.1.1 is still showing in my Control Panel but not on my Desk Top etc. I cannot seem to access it anywhere. How do I get open office back?

  • We know this is a post that dates back to early this year but obviously Windows 10 have not solved the problem. Ask Cortana has disappeared completely and the search box is frozen. I have tried system restore to an earlier date bit no success. We are aware that Windows 10 has some "teething" problems but we would have hoped that a plan to resolve this issue would have been put in place by now. Is there a solution we have not seen. Any help will be appreciated.
