If your start menu is working, click on that and when it's open just start typing. No need to click in any boxes. This should do exactly the same thing as the search box.Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

I am encountering the same problem .The search screen mentioned above is frozen so you cannot enter any text. The same applies to the window at the bottom of the screen that says search the web etc that is also frozen. Looking on Google search which shows this is possibly a wider spread problem on Windows 10. Is there a fix. is it worth trying a System restore going back to say a week age or will that do more harm than good. I have been on Windows 7 for years with no problem but 4 months into Windows 10 and this happens. Obviously I cannot leave it as it and I must do something but WHAT!!!0

Have you tried the solutions linked to above?
It did happen in earlier builds, not seen it happen on any of the machines I've updated.Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

Ok here (fully patched upgrade) but a friend did the upgrade from 7 yesterday and search and/or Cortana locked up; no more details.
RumRat's link provides some basic checking. Microsoft has lots of "Cortana doesn't work" reports - may be the same sort of thing here. MS forum here -> http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-win_cortana-winpc?sort=lastreplydate&dir=desc&tab=threads&status=all&mod=&modAge=&advFil=&postedAfter=&postedBefore=&threadType=all&tm=1455405697448If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.0 -
I am a real novice when it comes to things like this. I was trying to follow Rum Rat's helpful post. I entered "Sublime" in the search bar and then downloaded but I did not seem to get any further. Maybe I am doing something wrong perhaps someone could advise me what my step should have been. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank You0

This is obviously a problem with Windows 10 and can I add my name to the list of contributors who are finding it difficult to resolve. I click onto the window emblem besides Search and it is frozen. So I cannot click onto add r as when I type as nothing happens. I have also tried going into Command prompt when then I type the suggested text but after typing in the required text again nothing happens. Finally I have also gone correctly in the Sublime suggestion and followed through from the download but it does not seem to work.As for Cortana she has disappeared completely there is no reference to her anywhere. I am just adding my name to the list of people having the specific problem The suggestions are very helpful and are probably very easy for anyone with some Technical knowledge but others posting on this forum together with myself maybe the instructions are not complete enough or simple enough for us.Someone mentioned System restore which I understand but is it going to cure the problem and what damage can it do,I know what I am trying to say and hope it is clear enough you "Tech Wizards" to interpret HELP!!0

As mentioned in another post running concurrently Cortana has disappeared from my screen and can be found in my Apps History in the Task manager . I have been unable to reactivate Cortana and if I was able to do this it might solve the problem. Also the Windows button at the bottom of my screen is frozen and all the Apps that used to appear on the screen with Windows 10 have disappeared. Surely there must be a solution somewhere. I too, like the contributor "On My Todd" above have tried all the suggested opnions without any sign of success!!!. Perhaps there is some other suggestion we could all try. My problem is obviously not a "one off" so it cannot be anything do with a fault on my PC, the issue is Windows 10.0
