Fastest way to get a bill as proof of address?

I just rented a house in the UK, and need a proof of address to open a bank account. It takes a few weeks to receive the first bills for electricity or gas.

Is there any service that I can order and receive the first bill (which is acceptable to banks) quickly in my mail box?

A bank is unlikely to accept it, possibly, unless this 'something' is from a letting agency.
  • Have you applied for a National Insurance number?

An HMRC tax notification is generally accepted as proof of address.

I am surprised that you didn't think of a bank account before you rented a place. How did you pay your deposit if not by bank transfer, debit card or cheque? How are you paying your rent if not through one of the above? Are you dealing with a landlord who accepts cash?

Obviously, I have bank account, cards, etc from my home country. I just cannot set a Direct Debit without a UK bank account.

How could I think of a UK bank account before renting? It is impossible to open a UK bank account with a UK address.

In my practice, banks do not accept any kind of tenancy agreement.

It shouldn't be too hard to obtain a council tax bill. They are usually issued around this time of year anyway.

They sometimes do if it's a council let.

Unfortunately for the OP the council tax bill would surely be in the landlord's name?

  • When I arrived in the UK last year I was able to open a bank account at Lloyds without proof of address, after getting turned away from Barclay's, RBS, Santander, HSBC and Halifax.
