Hi! I'm desperately trying to bring down our grocery bills and want to know where it's best to bulk buy from... I've jotted down the following as a starter for things I could buy in bulk and store; pasta, toilet roll, beans, pulses, lentils, washing powder, tinned tomatoes, mayonnaise, ketchup, olive oil, cat food, washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets, rinse aid, shampoo, conditioner....I'm sure there's more I could add to the list...Just really want to hear from the experts how best and where best to start the bulk buying process! Thanks so much in advance!

Look at your consumption and try and buy the things you REALLY need at the best price first. Look around at every store you know sells what you want. Buy at the best price.

Start slowly at first stockpiling. Space can get taken up quickly, ( he says looking at a large stash of T-rolls.:o).

    How little I know.!! ;)

I need to buy soft drinks and catering supplies (plastic cutlery , plates et)
any ideas on best places for these items.

have looked at 'approved foods' but not as cheap as I thought they would be.
    Nice to save.

Costco is quite good for soft drinks (8 2litre bottles of Pepsi is £7.20 inc VAT).

But their plastic cutlery is quite expensive, although very good quality. I normally buy cheaper stuff from Asda. The polystyrene plates and bowls from Costco are also good and strong, but probably priced right value for the quality, they aren't expensive but aren't bargain cheap either.

I assume you mean you checked the Costco website? That doesn't show the same range as the warehouses at all and the website is much higher priced (as delivery is included).
The warehouses stock a huge range of soft drinks, including cans and 1.5, 1.75 and 2 litre bottles. Pepsi is cheaper than Coke both on cans and bottles and as I said the standard price is about £7.18 for eight 2 litre bottles.

Try eBay for the plastic plates & cutlery.
  • Hi,
This may have been covered somewhere else (in which case please point me to it) but my partner and i want to do a bulk shop of things that don't go off (e.g. toilet rolls) or have long shelf life dates in order to save money on our weekly shop.

Does anyone have good ideas about what items would be best and also whether this is a sensible way of cutting some costs. We happen to have a little bit of cash spare to be able to do a "big" shop.
    Thanks

    Phillip

Make a list of your usage rate of things, so you know if you are buying a month's supply or five years. Check for items becoming cheap, they usually cycle round, rather than just buying a lot of it. Don't buy so much, that you have loads left when it next goes on offer. Having stuff in, saves money, so you can cook vs. a takeaway etc.

Although an Amazon Prime customer, I have yet to try Amazon Pantry or Subscribe and Save.

I am an Ocado SmartPass customer and it's the only store I know where you can buy Evian and Badoit in boxes. That works out cheaper.

I came across a website called eat big or big eat, something like that, which had lots of catering packs. Haven't tried it yet.

Don't really have the space to store a lot of stuff.

Checked price of Yeo Valley, Rachel's and Calon Wen butter on Ocado and it's 1.85/1.90 so I went to my local Sainsbury's and bought 10 packs of own brand organic unsalted at 1.60 each and stashed in freezer. At 1.60 I got organic for less than some of the popular non-organic brands. No brainer.
