Who taught you? As that's wrong.
The IAM, and their training is based on the book 'Roadcraft'. Who taught you, or what makes you think I'm wrong?

    Have you actually read Roadcraft?

Because you are and cannot have read Roadcraft.

    Yes, I have read Roadcraft.
My point being, an advanced driver doesn't have to jump into each mirror every few seconds to know what's going on, and can build up awareness of what's going on around them using peripheral vision. You don't need to stare at the rear-view mirror, for example, to keep checking on a car you know is already there. If you're performing a manoeuvre, of course, you check your mirrors.
Perhaps instead of 'you're wrong' either of you could enlighten me and the rest of the forum?

Well as you've read it and are going on about awareness and advanced driving. Having seen a hazard what does Roadcraft tell you to do?

On a related thought, the Admiral group don't let the presence or absence of either IAM or RoSPA certification affect their premium calculations at all.
Other than the satisfaction of greater road awareness, and the improved courtesy to other road users, is there any financial benefit?

There's a huge financial benefit if by improving driving skills you avoid the ever increasing charges imposed by speed cameras or manage to avoid driving into other cars and having claims on your insurance record.

    Really?

Don't need to constantly check mirrors?

    What is the scan then?

You should be doing a scan of your mirrors as that stops things emerging from your blind spots or indeed entering your blind spots.

If you don't do regular mirror scans then you will miss something.

Doing regular mirror scans is not staring at your mirrors, you seem to have difficulty understanding the very basics of Advanced Driving. Awareness of what is going on around makes you a safer driver.

There is no way you have read Roadcraft.

Are you sure it wasn't "Roadrunner" that you read?

    Meep meep.....

Have never been given any discount on my private car policies.

I didn't notice any difference on my Chauffeur Policy either to be fair, though the quality of work I got due to my Advanced Driving skills was some form of financial reward I suppose.

Definitely not - their insurance partners bottom line is always higher than just doing the usual shopping round at renewal for the best deal (and you rule out the possibility of extra savings by way of the cashback sites)

There is a financial disadvantage though if you stay as a member after passing the test - the annual membership fee! (£32+)
