Free: Avast free, Avira free, Sophos free, Panda free, Qihoo 360
Paid: Kaspersky still tops the list0 -

Comodo is free and does everything I want, includes Firewall etc etc .It's your money. Except if it's the governments.0

Bitdefender free. As good, if not better, than Avast, and less resource-intensive.0

3rd party anti virus software is a thing of the past imho. i haven't used them for at least 5 years and i haven't had my bank account emptied or suffered any bods. its all about common sense and not clicking dodgy links"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0

antivirus software is like a merry go round. company 1 is the market leader and majority of people use company 1.
Then company 2 wants to dethrone company 1 and they do everything right, the make the AV light, they have very good detection and they make it free, so everyone on forums recommends them and link to them which improves their SEO and gets them on top 5 on google for free antivirus.
Then they get greedy, "right we've spent a lot of the investors money and go 5 million users worlwide, we now need to make money. We'll hide links to the free version and put the commercial version at the forefront. We'll sell add on premiums like anaonymisers, ad blockers and system tuneups." This goes on and they soon bloat the software. They even forget their key ethos of making a light AV and the bloatware just makes it slow and crashes windows.
The Company 3 comes and does what company did to company 1.0 -
avast was company 2, avira/avg free are company 3. Norton was company 1.0
