Diabetes and high blood pressure diet help please

Options
I'm NOT asking for medical advice, but can anyone point me in the right direction to a reliable site, or sites, that can recommend foods to eat that will help with both Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure? I have been googling for a while but can't find anything specific.

So far I have been using the low carb diet to control the diabetes, and it's been working, so sites that recommend pasta, potatoes etc aren't any help to me. Also foods like bananas, which are high in potassium, are also high in sugars, so a no no.

Any links that you have found helpful gratefully received. Many thanks.

  • As a diabetic with high blood pressure myself, can I suggest that you should first ask to see a diabetic nurse at your practice, or be referred to a dietician.

When I was diagnosed many years ago that was the first thing my GP did. I already had high blood pressure and was on medication for that. I was able to control my diabetes by diet for about 7 years, then I had breast cancer and everything seemed to go a bit haywire and was then put on medication.

You are right cutting the carbs but I really think you should see a dietician. Also the Diabetes UK website can be helpful.

Being diabetic isn't just die,t you have to have your eyes checked regularly, and you need to look after your feet.

Good luck I hope this helps

Its great that you're so motivated to take positive action, OP. Diabetes is an incredibly complex condition, and there is a lot to learn aside from dietary changes. The NHS is obliged to provide educational sessions for all people in the first year after they have been diagnosed with diabetes - start with your GP please.

Smart organisations recognise the value of providing it on an ongoing basis.

    Hi,

I'm not a diabetic, but I followed Dr Michael Moseley's 5.2 diet 2 years ago and lost loads of weight.

Now he has brought out his BSD (blood sugar diet) I've bought his book and am following it because I want to lose a few pounds fast before my DD's wedding.

it's 800 cals a day and restricted carbs. I started it on Sunday and have lost 4LBS already.

  • Thank you all so much for your replies, I am very grateful. I have ordered that book after looking at the website, it looks as though this is what I have been searching for!

I'm interested to know whether you have actually been offered any structured education to help manage your condition. Does DESMOND or XPERT ring a bell?

There's a lot of preamble before you get to the bare bones of the diet itself. It's nice to know the ins and outs of how it works, although I found he'd put too many case studies (for me) in it. But I skim read a lot. ;-)

It's my OH who has the conditions, and no he hasn't been offered anything, apart from check ups with the GP and nurse. But I do a lot of research which is how I found out about low carb helping the diabetes.

Thanks for the warning - I skim read too so can zoom over the case studies!

Please take a look at this page on the DUK site with your husband, OP - and then straight back to his GP.

There are 15 care essentials for people with diabetes, this is an easy checklist. The essentials are a minimum standard, and your DH is at such an advantage if he is motivated and takes control of things.
