Swan wireless cameras with VIRGIN router

I am not very good with computers and have now found an excellent computer man to help me out with matters that are beyond me. I always wanted to have some cameras around the house for security and my computer man recommended me some Swan that would do everything that I would love (wireless, get alerts on phone if anyone about etc etc). he has these installed at his house and no problem. He has been several times to mine but we now think it is VIRGIN routers that is not compatible with these cameras. We are both pulling our hair out as to why they are not working. These cameras were not cheap.

Can anyone recommend any ideas or have had the same problems. It is looking like I will have to flog these off as not working wireless. Ok with wires but that is not what I wanted them for!

on the box it says it is as easy as 1, 2, 3.... I think not

The Virgin media Superhub isn't the best router in the world but it's far more likely that your "computer man" isn't as good as you think he is and has got some setting wrong. Can you be a bit more specific about what "not working" means and what sort of things you've tried. The camera model might help too.

I have similar IP cameras although not Swan make and they work fine with my Virgin super hub. My brother set mine up so I can't tell you exactly what he did but it involved logging in to the router settings and setting up port forwarding and a static IP address.

    Hi

First of all you would be able to view the camera pictures locally?

So in the same way that you can access a printer (both to print wirelessly and monitor the ink levels) over your local network, and your Virgin SuperHub; the cameras would be accessible and viewable.

Then as mentioned above you would then move onto port forwarding etc. Setting up a VPN to access your home network via a fixed/known IP address.

So some more details would help us to help you.

  • My cameras that I purchased were Swann, and they are Swann Cloud HD, Indoor and Outdoor HD 720P. I cannot see anything else that might be of use. My man has got these cameras up and running on his own system (talktalk) but just cannot do these on the Virgin system. For one thing my laptop (a recent one) will not scan the codes in. We contacted Virgin last night and they want me to pay a £5 a month fee or £35 up front to help with a gadet fix but then I'm not sure whether they will get things going.

On the box its the easy peasey system to get going but its just not going wireless. Wired is a great picture but I need these to go outside away from the router so that is not an option.

If someone has got these going can you give me an idiots guide to doing these so perhaps I might have a go myself...

ta very muchly for everyones imput x

Why would you need a VPN? I have two IP cameras, and have never used a VPN to access them remotely.
  • don't even know what a VPN is.......

there was talk of port forwarding last night so that phase is familiar..... o to be brainy!

You don't need a VPN I think it just is adding to the confusion.

    Port forwarding maybe required.

But can you actually view the camera locally over Wi-FI and what is "For one thing my laptop (a recent one) will not scan the codes in."?

Opening router ports or using upnp to allow internet access to a camera, potentially allows other people to watch. Storing video in the cloud has a similar potential
Don't you dare criticise what you cannot understand
  • I think it would be best to get Swann cameras which support peer-2-peer connection.
Which is very simple, just plug ethernet cable in and it will do the rest.
No port forwarding or any setting changes.
And you can view them on your phone as well.

I will try to get a picture of mine later on.
