I've occasionally had the same problem with O2, and recieved double texts from a friend on Orange! Fortunately I haven't had the extra ones taken out of my allowance."Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.0

Vodafone had an issue recently where when the receiving network was vodafone, they would not aknowledge receipt of the text/mms, and as a result, the sending network would be requested to send again.
On orange network this affected customers with the 6233/6280 as far as i'm aware, and when sending to vodafone network (due to a back-log, slow clearance) people were being charged multiple times.
It'll be a case of checking your bill, and contesting it if you think it's happened to ya
