    This sounds bizarre!

Why does it sound bizarre, do you actually know anyone who works from home?

I do, my FIL does and his set-up/requirements for home work is exactly the same as the OP's. They also went to his house and checked his workspace area met the requirements.

No, which is probably why it sounds bizarre :) No wifi connections I can kind of understand as wifi can be a bit flakey and you'd drop your connection to the customer, but why does it matter which room you're in, or if you run a laptop instead of a desktop?

My FIL uses a desktop PC provided to him by his company. I would imagine they probably think laptop is not secure / risk of using laptop for personal/home use and if anything happened to it, the company might have data sensitive information on it which would be compromised.

With regards to which room; I would imagine partly it's due to if you were working from your bed, it's not a proper environment if you need to be making calls/speaking to customers / possible risk of being distracted/falling asleep etc. I do know they had a special workplace assessor go to his house and measured his desk and also what room he would be working from to see if it met the requirements his company had.

Sorry to de-rail your thread OP.

They want a desktop because it's not mobile; you can have a desk set up with a laptop for when you get inspected and work from bed.

OP - have you looked at the short term office spaces you get for start-ups? You essentially just rent a desk and an internet connection, but it should be possible to get a quiet one. Might be expensive on £15k, but so is renting a 2nd room.

Why aren't you looking to rent another property locally?
