  • I think you are going to have to be less fussy and accept working in your bedroom until you save enough for a flat of your own.

Where in Scotland are you living that has regular power cuts? Most rural areas in the UK have poor broadband speeds and mobile phone signals so if you move avoid another rural area.

If you can afford a loan repayments and don't need to use your overdraft, how much money have you saved so far to help fund the move?

Can you work from a library or cafe with wifi until your internet is back up?

You could maybe look at a money transfer credit card where you can transfer from the credit card balance to current account. mbna have just given me one, 4% fee then you just have to pay the minimum payment to avoid interest.

I don't need to use the overdraft at all I do have enough money, I wasn't aware that this would be impacting me at all! I just transfer all my money onto my savings account.

So how much do you have in your savings if you do this every month? Why are you desperate for a loan if you have savings?

Have you had your tax code adjusted for working from home? You should be able to claim a portion of your rent and bills against tax:

I don't see why moving to Wales would cost you 1.5k either - when I moved out of home I moved into a lodgings (Mid Wales) that cost £40 per week. Admittedly that was a good few years ago now, but if you look on spare room or gumtree you'll find plenty of choice for well under the £100 mark including bills. Even one bedroom flats go for that - and even cheaper still in the valleys.

If you have a laptop, Spoons with free wi-fi are great for all-day working if you get there early and find a quiet corner with a power socket.
  • I wrote a long reply yesterday but then as I posted the internet went off again -.-

Unfortunately I'm not able to work in a library or cafe or anywhere with laptop and wireless internet.
My work requires me to have a quiet and secluded office space (has to be a dedicated room in a house/flat, you're not allowed to work from your bedroom or living room for example) I need a dedicated phone line and broadband connection and I'm only allowed to use my desktop computer not a laptop. They do house checks too at any given time (had 2 since November) so you can't lie to them about it either. They can also see with their software if I would be connected through Wi-Fi etc so that's really not an option I'm afraid. As it's customer service, you can't have people talking in the background either or other loud noises.
I really wouldn't be able to rent a room in a shared place, in that case I'd have to rent two rooms in shared accommodation and find someone willing not to use the internet whilst I'm working (8 hrs a day between 9am-11pm) I really don't see how anyone would agree with that + I've got a dog so they have to be willing to live with a dog as well.
I'm not sure if Wales is different in this regard but when flatsharing in Scotland most of them had parties every weekend, and smoked weed and had cocaine etc, well call me fussy but I don't like to live and work in that kind of environment again.
I've currently got about £400 pound saved which is not really enough. I've not been able to save more as I only recently got back into work after long time of unemployment, I've only been paid twice so far which would probably also affect my chance of getting a loan. Normally I'd be able to save more but after long term unemployment I had a backlog of things to pay for.
I personally think I'd need about £1500 I think I broke this down before: let's say £250 agency fees for 2 people (I've seen places that charge more!) 300£ rent + £300 deposit (keep in mind that some places have higher deposit or rent even, also some places charge an extra £££ for pets, one place the extra pet bond was £200) + removal costs, I can't get a man with a van, I'd need at least a small truck + from here to Wales is about 8 hrs drive (without breaks) I've had quotes from £500 and up.
Depending on the white goods n the house I may also have to buy a washing machine and a cooker though they are low on the priority list. I currently can't wash my clothes in this house and there's no launderette either I'm dependent on my friend's mother, for a long time we said as soon as I get this job I'll get a washing machine, but then what's the point of buying a washing machine if we're moving? Originally I thought maybe we could stay till summer and save up before moving but I'm really days away of losing my job now :( I've also failed my gpow interview so if I lose this job I've got nothing to fall back on.
Regarding flatsharing with random strangers I've no idea how all our stuff and furniture would fit into a flat either. Just to clarify it's 2 people+ dog that I'd need to pay for, I can't just leave my friend behind.

Does it have to be Wales you move to? What about moving to another part of Scotland that isn't so rural such as Glasgow or Dundee? There's Aberdeen and Edinburgh as well although they are more expensive to live in. That said rents are tumbling in Aberdeen since the oil price nose dived.

It's just that tenants in Scotland have more rights and protections than their counterparts in England & Wales.

    A couple of questions

Why are you paying your friend ?
Is she/he planning on getting a job to pay you back ?
    Why Wales ?
Why not somewhere nearer to where you are eg Glasgow ? Would cut down on the moving costs.
Not everyone who rents are having parties/smoke weed, its down to the age of tenants.
There's tenants out there who don't have parties every weekend or smoke weed.

Just a thought but have you thought about renting an office desk/or a free room in an office building ?

[STRIKE]I take it your employer is stipulating your not allowed to work from your bedroom or living and not allowed to use a laptop but must use a desktop (don't know if its normal for working form home but it sounds a bit extreme)

What does it matter if your working from your bedroom or living room or if your using a laptop rather than a desktop.[/STRIKE]

You thought about changing jobs ?

I am currently sharing with my friend but I provide for the both of us. (food bills rent etc) He's on benefits and combined we are not able to come up with the sum to move now, I "would" have this money on my payday but I can't wait that long.

Why are you providing for your friend? Is your 'friend' really your boyfriend?

If he's on benefits and you are paying for everything, what exactly does his money go on then?

Have you asked your bank if they would give you a loan? If they say no then you are going to have to start thinking of alternatives.

Have you researched houses in Wales which would accept you, your friend on benefits, and a pet?

Regarding your broadband issues, you need to be applying pressure on your provider to fix the issue if it's affecting you working.

Have you looked for full-time work elsewhere rather than working from home?

    This sounds bizarre!
