I've always wanted to watch glaciers falling into the sea from a ship close by.
Now thinking MSE how to achieve this, maybe get a video, wait for some snow, open the windows, wrap up well, sound effects etc.
  • A quick aside:
I had a similar conversation with my Sil a couple of days back. she chose to spend a considerable amount of her savings on a hip operation. she could have had the same op on the NHS - but (and I agree totally with her), this way she will have the operation and will recover while relatively young enough to extend her working life.

Meritaten, I had a THR on the NHS at 51 - people had commiserated with me when I was told I'd need one, saying it'd be twenty years before I'd actually get one. It wasn't even two months... I had to ask them to delay it slightly whilst I took DS3 to investigate potential universities! I was still fully functional & walking up to 5 miles a day, though in a lot of pain & not sleeping much. They said they tend to operate sooner rather than later with "young" patients as they'll get the most out of it & recover sooner; if I'd been 70+ I might have had to wait the full 6 months. So before she spends the money, get her to investigate the policy in your area as it might well be similar. Also - tell her I highly recommend it! And to book a holiday somewhere nice & warm, with a swimming pool, for about 2-3 months after the op - bliss!

I have....writing it down and reading your responses helped a great deal, thanks all.

The said experience is attending TED conference 2017, in Vancouver. You compete for a place and are chosen based on the srength of your application, so its never a cert! If accepted, you then pay the fees, travel accomodation, subsistence etc, which I calculate to be at least £8k. The theme for next year interests me enormously, but realistically I could take the week off work and subscribe to watch it live as I will for the 2016 conference from tomorrow :)). That way I'll get to see the material and expand my mind, what's lost is the networking opportunity but its also the more affordable way of doing it, recurrently. I still plan to attend one year, when it is held in London / a UK city.

It did occur to me after writing the OP that taking 18 months off work is a very tempting idea, and no way near as unrealistic as I thought it might be. Its a real consideration now :)

  • I am so glad you have decided to go for it. The way I look at life it that it is for making memories, when we see places we have visited with the children or more recently just us 2 we always remember the time we had there and look back with fond memories , we never think oh I loved that new sofa/tv/car we bought 20 years ago. If you can afford to fill your life with memories then go for it. Even if it is a day out somewhere.
Since we have lost both our dads to cancer at a early age our motto has always been "life's to short" and "life is for making memories".
My o/h is a funeral director who loves his job but see's very young people who have had their lives taken from them far to young.

    Just do it xx

  • Life is indeed short. My DD said something a few months ago which really struck a chord with me, that life is made up of every day so you should have the things you enjoy every day, not for special occasions. We started talking about the fact that she has expensive tea bags and she said that she enjoys her tea so it's worth the extra money to her to have a great cuppa every time, we went on to discuss all the other things that we save 'for best' or for some special occasion and decided to use, wear and have the things we love as often as we can. Every day now has a bit more pleasure, I feel that I look better as I am wearing my nicer clothes, which is making me bother to put a bit of lippy on, so I feel a bit more confident, and I am generally a little bit happier every day. (I have also upgraded my teabags and she's right, it is worth it!)
