O2 unlocking obstacle.

My daughter has been an O2 customer for years. In November 2013 she bought a new Nokia phone from Argos, locked to O2. She used the phone for around 18 months on an O2 monthly contract.
She then purchased a smart phone and her previous phone she's passed on to me. O2 say that pay monthly clients can get a free unlock code at any time.
My daughter went online, but could only access details for her new phone.
She rang up and was told that she could not have a code for her prevouis phone because she bought it from Argos and not from O2. This despite the fact that she only ever used the phone on O2 (she had to of course).
So this means that this handset is stuck on O2 despite them giving the impression that a free unlock is available.
Anyone else fallem foul of this crafty little ruling?

Nonsense. They don't have codes for any phones and obtain them from manufacturers. They, not Argos.

To request a phone which isn’t your current one to be unlocked, you'll need to complete our online form.
The only problem I see that they may want £15 for unlocking as it was bought as PAYG phone.

Complain - or check how much unlocking costs on ebay.

She might have used the phone on an o2 monthly contract, but was the phone bought from Argos on contract? Or was it a PAYG phone that she just happened to use with a contract sim?

If it was a PAYG phone you will need to pay for the unlock, irrespective of what sim you used in it.
