OH just went downstairs to begin cooking our roast pork Sunday lunch, when the doorbell went. Had to come back upstairs to collect key for outer front door that he hadn't unlocked yet. Well, it is Sunday so no post.
2 young ladies asking if we knew if any Polish people lived in the road. OH told them we only knew our close neighbours and none of them are Polish. Then he asked if they were looking for any particular Polish people.
Oh no, we're Jehovah's Witnesses and we have some leaflets in Polish to give Polish people.0 -

Long and horrible story so won't tell it. But when I think of him I'm deffo Not Nice even now. [niceperson]0 -
It's VERY windy today! Windier than the recent storms that had names - and a bizarre thing happened. For the first time, ever, the wind has managed to blow my side gate open! I've been through some wild and windy nights before, but it's never done that before.0

We went into London today to see The Art of the Brick, DC Comics exhibition. Very enjoyable, but only one word for the weather: dreadful.

I've revised my opinion of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Background......I was brought up in one mainstream religion and was very fervent.
At one point, as a teenager, I had a very long and involved conversation on the doorstop with a Jehovah's Witness, during which we parried our different views.
I read the leaflets, but we agreed to disagree.
When I became an adult I was disillusioned with that particular church, so left, and for several years was an agnostic, dabbling in various ideas.
Then I had a leaning towards another mainstream religion, mainly, in hindsight, because of a certain sense of belonging it gave me, rather than from any deep conviction.
Then when I hit 50, I suddenly had a 'realisation', and decided I was actually an atheist. Scary and liberating at the same time. Anyway, it made perfect sense.
(Blame String Theory, which I discovered at the same time!:D)
Since then, when Jehovah's Witnesses call, I stop them after their first few words, give them the gist of what I've just said here, quoting some biblical expressions so that they know what I'm talking about.
I tell them that I've spent many years thinking about it all, until I saw the light and realised that I was an atheist. All with a beaming, happy smile on my face.
Then I say, "it's ok, I shan't try and convert you".
At that point, I think that they think I'm a lost cause.
However, I'm keen to get across that just because one is an atheist, it doesn't mean that you can't try to be a good, honourable and charitable person, with love for one's fellow man, not in the hope of a heavenly reward, (because I don't believe there will be one), but because it's the right way to live.
And I like to get across that just because they and I have diametrically opposing views, I can still respect theirs, even if they don't respect mine.
I wonder if I've ever made a convert?
I remember once, a while back, being approached by a couple of very good-looking young Mormon men in my local High Street, (haven't seen any Mormons for years, come to think of it), and when I gave them a similar spiel, they said that they were surprised I was being friendly, as 'non-believers' usually give them short shrift.
I replied that just because someone's an atheist, it doesn't mean that they are a horrible person and disrespectful of another's beliefs.
I like to think that that might have struck home. They certainly seemed to take it on board!
(Of course, being accosted by two good-looking young men in the street is now only ever likely to be if they are Mormons, so one has to grab what one can, these days! :rotfl:)
Hmm, art of the brick........ ? English/Flemish/stretcher bond, engineering or London stocks? I will now investigate the link!(I just lurve spiders!)

Is that because Polish people are unlikely to have a religion? There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -

He's really clever. I saw his last exhibition in Barcelona and he made incredible things, like a 3D version of Klimt's the Kiss, all out of Lego, and a beautiful copy of Starry Night, as well as other artists such as Michaelangelo all out of Lego. Today though, just DC comic characters but some with such as a cubist version of Superman and a Wonderwoman in the style of Roy Liechtenstein.
