Didn't military personnel who were taught by the Army/Navy/RAF during the war, and possibly doing national service, have an exemption from taking a civilian test?
I think they did. Nowadays I I think they encourage OTC trainees at uni etc. to take civilian tests (at Army expense). There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -
My 2005 Rover had autolocking, as does my Mercedes A-Class - go more than a few feet or over a certain speed (whichever comes first) and the doors lock. The difference between the two was that the Rover didn't unlock until you switched the engine off or hit an unlock button on the dash, whereas the Merc allows any door to be unlocked/opened using the interior handle as usual.
My Duster also has it, I believe, but I haven't enabled it because carjacking, etc. is so unlikely on the Cumbrian roads - heck, I can go for miles and not see anybody, in cars or not. The only traffic queues I encounter are if I mistime my journey and get held up at a level crossing.
The part of Cumbria I know a bit is the Lake District, and that is far from traffic free. But that's only about a third of the county. I think it's really very clever of you to cram all the tourists into that third! No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -
It makes sense not to let you lock it from the outside if the key is inside. However, I'd want to know if you can lock it from the inside (for security) while the key is on the inside with you?
Yes, you can, and in fact it will lock itself - when OH waits for me in the car when I go to collect my prescription from the pharmacy the car has always locked itself when I get back to it. Mind you, if I had my fob on me I wouldn't know it had locked itself, as it would immediately unlock as soon as I took hold of the door handle
Oh, in other news, DGS has got the school he wanted0 -

Great news!
There was some change in car locking rules, the newest cars aren't allowed to auto-lock when you reach 5mph, whereas older cars were allowed this facility.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. The monster crane's next door, lifting all the pre-made roof trusses onto the top level. That's its third appearance, it comes every 2-3 days.
Nearest to me now has nearly all the walls, roof and internal walling in place. I expect there'll be bricklayers next week maybe!
In other news, one of the neighbour's houses is up for rent, like mine, it's £850/month (2 bed terr). They've been there since new.
It's a plus they'll take their 2 kids with them .... but it's a minus if new kids arrive!0 -
Congratulations to DGS, ivyleaf! It's always a relief!Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Are these two kids worse than average? No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

It all depends on what roads one uses
The A591 past Windermere and on to Ambleside and Keswick will be busy, especially in tourist season - because it serves the tourist traps.
Others can be much quieter - even the A593 Broughton-Ambleside road, which I use a lot, can be very quiet. I can easily get from Broughton to Torver without meeting another car - mind you, it is somewhat narrow, twisty and hilly so tourists "in the know" will often turn off at Torver and take a different, wider road. Many of those not "in the know" wouldn't use it anyway because it doesn't lead to anywhere "touristy". Suits me0 -

The new ones might be nice kids, such things do exist so I'm told0 -
Are these two kids worse than average?
No. Kid dynamics is a strange beast.
There were two houses with kids, never any trouble whatsoever.
Then four houses vacated and two were occupied by people with kids - people with kids who thought playing around the cars was acceptable .... and they got the original two sets of kids out there too. So it went from 0 houses with kids playing around cars to 4 houses with kids playing around cars.
This will take it down to 3 houses ... but is one of those who never played around cars before.
Trouble is ... "be careful what you wish for" - as you might end up with something worse, so, while I'd LOVE the last two lots to vacate and it all to go acceptable again ... we could get worse lots.
Another neighbour spoke to me the other day about it and said they were considering banging on some doors because they've seen some of the kids nearly run over and the ball games and assorted random abandoned toys/bikes are out of control.
It's not "the street" and it's not a play area and it's not "communal space" ... it's for moving/parking vehicles.0
