Does that make you a frog?

    Only my legs!

I just checked where my grandmother was actually born.
Her parents were French, but moved to the Channel Islands and had their children, so, technically, my granny wasn't a frog ... but spoke Jersey French rather than English, which is what most of them did back then (b.1895).

Not sure that you would be insured without a licence.

Well, I imagine your insurance policy wouldn't be valid, but AFAIK car insurance companies don't check if you have a licence before they let you take out a policy, so I don't think your car would show up on the PNC as uninsured.

That's an interesting point; I think your car can be insured before you own a license, so you could presumably get it MOTed if somebody else could drive it there. I often take Mrs zag's car for its MOT but never have to show my license.

    Exactly.

It would be really bad luck if you stole a car that was not insured and then got picked up by ANPR and pulled over.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

I had a friend who never took/passed his car test. He was a good driver - unlike a lot of other friends I had who had a license and were !!!!.

I'm pretty sure you can own a car without having a driving licence and still be able to insure it and MOT it. Presumably you'd be insuring it for someone else to drive, though, unless it was SORNed.
As long as you don't drive it, etc.

Many years ago I had a boyfriend whose granddad was a terrible driver. He went everywhere in second gear. He was driving before the tests were introduced so never had to take one. I would imagine he and his peers are now dead.

As a result of the driving....?

Locally lots of the motorways and soem towns are fully anpr'd, pretty sure you can't drive into my bit of inner herts without passing an anpr'd junction.
    I think....

I didn't know it was that widespread.

So does the computer automatically flag up any numberplate filmed that isn't on the insured/mot-ed list?

Never forget a friend of mine, I had just failed my 1st test and she had just passed hers, so she offered to drive me into Ipswich.

Coming up to traffic lights I was confused as she didn't seem to be slowing down, I started with a gentle "XXX stop" then got more insistent and loud until I had to shout stop at the absolute loudest I could. Turns out she didn't realise the red light meant she had to stop!

God only knows how she passed her test, she knew next to nothing about driving and in fact, lost her licence within a year...I haven't been in a car with her driving since that day.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

    Cripes!

As you say, however did she pass her test?
Maybe she didn't encounter a single red light on her test?
But she must have done while she was learning, surely?

    That's scary.

I think as late as the 50s or 60s you could cross over to the Irish republic and buy a driving license the same way we'd buy a TV or dog license over here.

As for ANPR, how do they deal with cars with foreign plates? Presumably it deals with Northern Ireland plates nowadays, but Isle of man, Channel Islands?

Actually this reminds me of a mate at school who inherited his mum's car when he was a teenager. I think it had to be kept in a lockup until he was old enough to drive it.
