What I meant - and said very badly - is that everybody could still have a fair trial, but with a cutdown version of the hoo-hah and ceremony.

It's a costly system and process and there are times when there's no need for expensive hoo-hah. Yet, as the system is currently set up, the hoo-hah has to be gone through.

If a shopkeeper buzzes their panic alarm, 2 policemen turn up and the perp is caught in the shop without any doubt he was raiding the place.... it shouldn't be necessary for all the hoo-hah.

Hoo-hah was from the olden days when there was less certainty and less evidence. No CCTV, no DNA, etc.

These days, for a lot of instances, you know you've "got the right person".

If I use my phone to video me bashing a granny down the High street, then posting it on Youtube ... no hoo-hah needed. Just a sentencing.

I think the problem the police have is that a lot of CCTV isn't very good quality, plus, youtube videos can be manipulated, which is why film so often can't be used as evidence.

There has to be due process, but I accept that sometimes it does seem as if the perpetrators get let off on a technicality, and not because they have been proven innocent.

I would still rather see two perpetrators set free than one innocent person convicted, though.

Just watched the 2nd episode of Who Do You Think You Are, Amanda Holden.

Very interesting, but it left me feeling the programme needed to be more.

They really just answered her two tree queries, rather than following entire lines. So you come away thinking "that was interesting, but what about filling in the gaps I've now got".

Some years ago I read an article about leadership and groups. It appears that within a group, once a loud person has spoken out, most others will simply go along with what they said.

Even if they're wrong.... because they spoke out, loudly, that was enough for the sheep group.

Unfortunately for me .... I'm the person who sticks their hand up and says "Hang on, that's not right is it ...." and people don't like things to be questioned, they don't wish to fully explore/discuss something. They've already made their mind up and they're behind Mr/s Mouthy.

Studies also demonstrated that the mouthy person is, too, usually wrong.

So people are mostly making wrong decisions because a mouthy/loud person arrogantly said their piece.

    :)

Lesson: In life you can be wrong ALL the time, so long as you're outspoken and say it first.... and are arrogant enough to be loud enough and intimidating enough that others just line up behind you.

I'm also the one who sticks their hand up and says "Err, not sure I agree".

    I've bred 3 more of them too.....:rotfl:
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Very last parent's evening or whatever they are calling it now, tonight. Couldn't have gone any better, he is already achieving maximum grades, his work cannot be faulted, nothing to be improved on. The only thing they could think of was that he may be getting some teasing due to his height and were worried about it making him think he wasn't as good as he is....youngest soon put them at ease as it doesn't bother him at all and is usually the one to instigate it!

Going back to the group/sheep thing, I think that a lot of the time people don't have strong feelings one way or the other, and so can quite legitimately be swayed one way by a forceful argument, and then possibly another way if another argument is put forward.
I suppose that's the good thing about balanced debate.

But then there's the "I can't really be bothered to think about this" factor, so people are happy to let someone else do the thinking for them.

Then there's the "What's easiest for me?" factor, rather than what's the best, equitable or most just option.

Then there's the 'people who aren't really listening, but having a whispered chat to someone' factor.

Then there's the "Isn't it about time we went to the pub?" factor. :D

We've had a classic example of all this happening in AmDram recently. I won't go into details, but at one point I was longing for my own island somewhere remote! :rotfl:

First morning it's not been solid frost for a few days!

First frosty morning I removed the solid ice disk from the bucket and propped it up in the sunshine - it only 1/2 melted and 24 hours later was still there.

Yesterday I removed the second solid ice disk from the bucket and propped it up in the shade... it's still half there, but there's no evidence of frost this morning on the car/garden.

ETA Maybe it could only send you 5 minutes into the past rather than many years?

Pastures, it may be time to think about a party wall surveyor, as GDB said earlier

    http://www.mypropertyguide.co.uk/articles/display/10080/the-role-of-the-party-wall-surveyor.htm

Or at least having a brief chat with one if concerned.

    Will delete if you want

Nothing made of crochet is evil!

    ....

I'm sure it'll all turn out fine in the end.... I'm a great believer that things end up OK ... and it's better to wait to see what happens, rather than going out shouting at the first instance.

They're a small/local firm in charge, so probably "quite reasonable" to small issues should anything noteworthy actually occur.
