Hehe, I remember once, in Wales, we saw a sign that told us it was six miles to somewhere with several "Ll's" in it. We took the turning, drove a couple of miles up to the head of the valley, across a bridge and back down the valley - to come out about 200 yards from where we'd turned off the previous road.
If I had a suspicious mind, I'd guess that some wag had turned the sign round0 -
I once asked for directions in Cornwall to a fairly distinctively placed house.
"Oh", I was told, "That'll be Old Jim's old place. I know that, it's down the end of the lane at Old Farm. That comes out opposite the petrol station and that road leads to the pub just down here called the Smuggler and Incestuous Relationship".
He gave me perfect directions only backwards.
I swear that an Irishman did once give me directions that commenced, "Well you don't want to start from here". I know it sounds unlikely but Cubs Honour..
Interesting day at work today. I was talking through the implications of measuring the climate impact of our investments. It gave me some really good ideas. It's funny how explaining something to someone gives you fresh insights.
Still no sign of winter in the day but it's nippy this evening. It's 16C at the moment but it's going to be 8C. I definitely noticed the chill going out to turn on the pool filter this evening.0 -

I found when the boys were young that there was certain expectations of activities they would be doing, all of which when added up, cost a lot. Cubs/scouts, swimming, cadets, football/rugby/tennis, music lessons, horse riding, judo/karate etc and of course, the special nice outings at school for activities week where they go abroad.
My boys did pretty much all of them (well James mainly, youngest didn't much care for group things apart from swimming) pre divorce because that was what middle class parents did with their children. Unfortunately post split up, it caused a lot of stress to me as they were all signed up to these things, usually with minimum contracts or notice periods and all of a sudden, I had less than a quarter of the income I had before (for those who don't know the history, ex hubby hasn't been the most forthcoming of absent parents financially or emotionally)
I managed to keep swimming club going for two of them for another year or so, luckily they halved the fees and James pulled out of doing it plus cubs for Josh and scouts for James. I struggled along trying to pay for music lessons for Josh for his first year at high school but had to give up after about 3 months, it was just too expensive.
The one thing I worked out though was that we had been killing ourselves trying to get children to their clubs, fitting in working etc that actually what the boys really wanted and was missing out on was real family time. Walks along the prom, picnics in the forest etc where we could all be together, so I did that instead. We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -
Just playing catch up... Broadband went off yesterday afternoon around 3, and only came back on just before mid day. Second outage in 3 days, the earlier one was only about 6 hours though. According to the Virgin help line when OH called it the TV was down as well, fortunately our wasn't!0

One of the boys brought a friend home from school. Silly me thought that was all that was required. Friend got into a panic that there wasn't an activity organised and phoned his parent. My son told him that the plan was for them to chill in the garden. Friend phoned parent and said it was Ok as now they were going to be doing "chilling".I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. ) They'd done all they wanted to with the house and garden and didn't want to get into the rut that many ex-pats they knew had done - Monday, all meet at the bar in Civray, Tuesday, all meet at the bar in Charroux, Wednesday, all meet at the bar.... get the picture?
