Looking at the maths question, I can see that it could be challenging for a year two student. They are only little, it won't be that long since they learned to count beyond ten. The question isnt "what's 63 plus 2" it's more complex than that and requires them to understand two calculations, as well as the context.

I'm not saying that the question shouldn't be there, rather that we aren't seeing it through the eyes of a six year old. The hardest part for them may not even be the numbers, but knowing once they've got them whether the context means, they have to add two, or subtract them.

You're right; it does seem hard for a six-year-old.
If this were the very first time they had come across this sort of question, I would say it's too hard.

However, they have probably had exercises in this type of question and have probably been shown how to analyse it and the method to use to tackle it.

At the end of the day, (as I understand it), the Sats tests are there to assess the teaching methods, rather than an absolute test of a child's ability, so I would assume that if a type of question caused widespread problems, it would indicate a level that is too high for that age group.

The son of one if my colleagues had his SATS yesterday. He's 11, so the older cohort. An said that the school has emphasised the SATS all year, and been prepping the students fir them for all of that time, which sounded a bit like an 11+.

The schools are assessed on value added. So they want the age 6 pupils to do badly in SATS and the age 11 ones to do well.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Talking of gaps, I realised I hadn't heard if the Forth Bridge had reopened. Had to google it just now!

Yes, the end of December to all but HGVs, and then February for them.

    I just hadn't heard! :rotfl:

    Philosophical thought of the day:
Here's a conundrum I've just come across on another thread......

Why is it that holey socks keep turning up in your sock drawer, but perfect socks go missing?
Does a hole in a sock turn it into a Homing Sock, whereas perfect socks have a wanderlust?
What is it in the sock's psyche that brings about this sea-change?

The younger SATs takers will already have been at the school for 3 years, so they have had time to thicken them up.

Anyway producing rubbish key stage 1 SATs results won't endear you to the parents who may produce the brightest buttons. Particularly those who will jump to public schools at age 7. Though the ability to produce low SATs results at the same time as getting the darlings through 7+ entrance exams may be viewed as a neat trick.

I'm sure value added is a more complex calculation involving the number entitled to free school meals and the number whose first language isn't English.

Eurovision: UK reaching the final 10 now down to 7/2. I can cash out and be £35 up, stick with it and end up £55 up or £5 down.

What would you do, if you were relying on income from a letting, and that income dried up because the tenants wouldn't/couldn't pay?

We have a smaller version of this dilemma in real life. Have a tenant who can't afford any more that the council pay in housing benefit. Could get more on the open market, but the only way of doing that is to evict her. That would end up with the bailiffs on the street scenario. The longer it goes on the more the rent gap widens.
