We get plenty of British TV here: Dr Who, Top Gear, Jamie Oliver, Downton Abbey, Grand Designs plus a load of American blockbusters: Breaking Bad, How I Met Your Mother, Modern Families. Aussie TV is mostly terrible, either shoddy remakes of foreign shows or very bad reality TV.
There are a few good shows. QandA is okay (our Question Time) and there is an excellent program about marketing and advertising presented by two old marketing and advertising pros which gives some brilliant insights into a world I know little about. There is an Aussie Top Gear which it is very hard to describe how bad it is. One of the big current affairs shows has what appear to be paid for segments that they are at best opaque about (60 Minutes) and seems to have paid a large bribe to the Lebanese in order to have a presenter and crew released from prison to try to kidnap a child!
Better Homes and Gardens is quite fun, it's a program which is basically the lifestyle pages from the newspapers: cooking, DIY and gardening. Oh and Gardening Australia is great because Costa. Costa has got the greatest beard I have ever seen.
Growing up in the 60s/70s, the only Aus TV I was exposed to was Skippy, The Magic Boomerang and the Phoenix Five, great series that I miss terribly. As in: not at all. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -
A thought before I go to bed
I planted about half my garden with strawberries about 15 years ago and they have provided very nice strawberries every year with absolutely no tending to. Actually I only planted 3 small plants and they spread to half the garden on their own will. A great return on capital invested
Today I noticed the new tenant has got rid of of them. Maybe they thought they were weeds?
The good news is they have done a great job of the garden the first and only tenants ever to actually tend to the garden. The bad news is my strawberries are gone
Highly recommend strawberries if you have a garden especially if you dont really do gardening. No idea why they plant them in poly tunnels no need they tasted great and seemed to grow just fine and that was a north ish facing slope. The strawberries also ripen over a period of a couple of months so its not one harvest and stuff your face its more like a bowl every couple of days and just pick the perfectly ripe ones while cursing the slugs for eating small bits of many of them rather than being good about it and fully eating a whole one or two and leaving the rest alone
Anyway good night to all0 -
"but what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career" :rotfl:
You are Liam Neeson and I claim my 5 pounds. If I'd not already decided what I'm watching tonight, I might watch Taken. Awesome film... so bad but so good.
Instead, tonight I'm going to watch Purple Rain. Which even has a song about me! Well, it has my name in the title and there aren't many songs you can say that about.
Was lucky enough to see Prince when he had his residency at the O2 almost 10 years ago. Absolutely amazing.
I could have written your entire post! Except I didn't watch Purple Rain last night. But everything else I thought/did/is relevant.
My friend used to sing that song to me. :eek:Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Well that's a turn up for the books. I was listening to the radio and they interviewed a bloke that was turned down to sing on the AC-DC tour in favour of Axl Rose (!!!! that he is, not a fan of Axl Rose) and he sang a bit of Back in Black. The Girl starts bobbing her head along with the music and kinda half singing it in that way that you do when you know the song but don't really know the words.
I asked her if she knew the song. Turns out she does. Acca Dacca (as they are known in Aus) are still huuuge here, massive. So we went down a fun little You Tube rabbit hole together. Now we've got the Cream version of Strange Brew on and we've got some Steppenwolf coming up next.
It's funny the stuff kids pick up. Altogether now.....Why don't you tell your dreams to me, a little fantasy will set you free.....
It's been a nice day today. Mrs Generali is off studying so me and the Generalissimos have had a chilled out day at home really. I watched some Dr Who with them and some Mythbusters and now they're playing computer games at the dinner table on laptops while I type this and regale them with dodgy hippy music. If one of them wraps a Harley round a tree with a head full of acid then I blame this afternoon!0 -
Love that, Generali.
We had one of DD's friends to play when they were in reception class.
DD asked her what her favourite song was and she replied with "Highway to Hell".

We had 'Highway to Hell' and 'Whole Lotta Love' (Led Zep) too on our little journey. We've moved on to XTC, Senses Working Overtime. She loves that song. We've got The Kinks on next. I love Sunny Afternoon. Did you know it was a response to The Beatles moaning about paying too much tax on the song Taxman?
The taxman's taken all my dough,
And left me in my stately home.....

Hi all, I've been a bit absent but hoping all are well.
It's London Marathon day!!
I'm feeling very jealous, but watching it on tv it looks just fantastic, if a bit cold.
There's a guy on the running site, Ian, taking part. He lost one lung not so long ago to Cancer; multiple other lymph node issues; he has weeks to live; and this is his response.
I'm just in awe of people like that. I'm selling a favourite pair of hifi speakers to put the money to his cause.0 -
I was out last night doing birthday celebrations....somehow, I have managed to reach 21 x 2 + 4 today.
It looks better putting it that way.....We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -
