1: the oven works. get over it.

2: the rent and change of tenants etc, you should research basic contract law and basic tenancy law.

You have an oven that works and with the igniter you have perfectly safe ignition that many people use.

How much rent are you paying and where?

    £595 Leicester increasing to £625
If it was a heating element that had gone, no of course not, as it is just an igniter.., yes.

If you had this happen and it was your oven.., would u replace it or would u buy a lighter? If so, perhaps you could consider buying a cheap one? I bought a really good one for £200 (built in electric oven). Cheaper ones are available.

As the oven still works, albeit with a broken igniter, you might find the LL is slow to react.

You could also check what part is broken and if you can locate one. It might be that the LA have been as lax about this as well. It'll be a lot cheaper. The igniters might actually just need a good clean. I steamed mine, cleaned them with a needle and they started working again (advised to do this by the guy who came round to do the yearly gas inspection).

I was under the impression that if an ignition broke the landlord was required to fix it? The Gas Cooking Appliances (Safety) Regulations 1989 says 'Burner ignition devices must work to ensure prompt ignition of the burner.'?

You can of course feel free to enforce that, the LL may decide it's not worth the hassle and simply remove the oven (as it is not repairable) and decide not to replace (as a LL isn't obliged to)

so you think that everyone in the world has the right to a gas cooker only if it has electric ignition?

as said above, get over it and buy a hand held igniter. See if the LL will pay for that instead.

Prompt ignition will be achieved with a manual lighter.
Failed igniter does not fail a gas safety check.
It is unrealistic to expect a complete replacement for such a minor defect.
  • Well then, if the LL won't respond to the request, try taking him to court? Might cost more than a lighter though.
  • Right well let's leave it there then shall we. Thanks to anyone that actually answered my genuine questions without being mean and/or rude.
  • You can also get hand-held piezo lighters that produce sparks when you grip a handle, e.g.: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kitchen-Craft-Piezo-Electric-Lighter/dp/B00GGLITXM/ref=pd_sim_201_3?ie=UTF8&dpID=31nyKS9-gtL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=1PDJ05T4WYJR2TC4JTE1

Will allow you to ignite a gas burner without need a seperate flame and doesn't need topping up with lighter fuel.

When I experienced the same problem in a rental place a few years ago the agent sent someone out to try and fix it and they declared it an uneconomical repair and bought us a piezo lighter. It worked just fine.

    Hi Monkey

If you read through I don't think anyone was mean or rude they just disagreed with you.

Many people come here only expecting to have their opinion endorsed and are surprised when a more pragmatic approach is the general opinion.

I don't know aboutLeicester rents but £565 or even £625 a month for four people seems very inexpensive. I allot of areas including Londonwhere you plan to move to you will pay four times that.

I dont think anyone's mentioned this yet, but have you checked it's not a battery that provides the ignition spark and this might simply need replacing ?
