60th birthday - ideas please

Options
Hello. I'm thinking about my 60th birthday next year and would like to plan a holiday abroad - something special, but still relatively budget.

My birthday's the very beginning of March, so it needs to be suitable at that time of year.

We don't tend to like big cities, although I do like architecture and culture. Would like something relaxing, but definitely not just sitting on a beach or by a pool. We've already travelled quite a bit (Spain, France, Sweden, USA, Australia)but generally in a v budget way - mostly camping, with the odd night in a hotel.

Two thoughts so far
Northern Lights trip to Norway, Sweden or Iceland
Snorkelling over coral reefs - Red Sea or elsewhere

Would love to kick some ideas around, thanks...

  • South Africa, 3 nights in Cape Town and a tour along the garden route to Port Elisabeth with a couple of nights either staying close to or staying at a game park to see the animals up close. This was my 60th birthday Holiday and We both still remember it with great pleasure.

We did drive but a tour would perhaps be a better option if you wanted company and didn't want to drive. I think March would be a good time for the weather, we went in January.

    Depends on your budget really.

It's a tough question and all down to taste.

Plenty of culture in Amsterdam, loads of museums there as well as a short rail trip to The Hague for more art galleries \ museums.

    Spain for Bilbao or Barcelona.

My personal favourite is Berlin but none of my options will have hot or even warm days in March.

My birthday is this month when we are all fed up with darkness, rain and cold but I take my 'birthday' treat either in a hot country or later in the year when it's better weather in this one.

Good for you for planning ahead!

I went to New Zealand for my 60th at that time of year, heading south from Auckland to South Island, and it was fab. It wasn't the cheapest option (especially as I paid for my daughter and bf - who live there, to join me) and I didn't do budget accommodation but it was a really lovely holiday with lots of walking, sight seeing and activities.

  • Frankly, every time I pick up a paper or see the news, it puts me off foreign travel with all the unrest around the world.
On my wife's 60th, I said "Come on love, get your coat on I've booked a table".
But when we got there she got all shirty and stormed out saying "I don't like playing snooker"

    :)
    Have a nice day guys.
Trying to learn something new every day.

At least she got a present.
I'm 67 tomorrow and don't hold out much hope, after 45 years.

    Happy Birthday
  • Thanks for ideas.

I did think of the Netherlands for this year (Bosch exhibition) but flights were not cheap for a short trip, and accommodation's not cheap there either.
So I won't be going anywhere this year but am promised a rabbit roasted in garlic.

I'm liking the idea of the Cape, and also NZ.
I had thought of Australia and decided it would be too hot, but I guess NZ would be nice at that time, as would southern South Africa.

Sitting at home doing nothing was what I did for my 60th

    Well, that's Moneysaving I suppose!
It's what I ended up doing for my 50th, and I definitely want to avoid it next year.

Actually, the trip I wanted to do for my 50th and couldn't afford at the time, we ended up doing last year. It was great, and very Moneysaving.

Cheap flights to Seville, camping in a quiet Andalusian village amongst olive, almond and orange trees, and a visit to the Alhambra.
