It might do, but when various referenda have been held, there doesn't seem to be that much appetite among the people of Europe for this ever-closer union.

I suspect that the likes of the Germans will have second thoughts when they realise that they will have to pay the bill, whilst the likes of the Greeks will have second thoughts when they realise they are about to be downgraded to the status of a local parish council.

Worked so well in Yugoslavia, you must be right.

I think Danothy is thinking the liberal free market capitalist model rather than dictatorial socialism

They'll get to charge a Parish Precept, which will probably amount to more than the Tax they usually manage to collect

The liberal free market capitalist model would indeed be the EU, but my (facetious) remark was directed towards her statement that 'world peace' could be achieved "through steps that move towards global union, which probably would be preceded by steps towards closer European union". The Union of the South Slavs fits that bill as a step towards global union. Didn't work out to well in the end.

Don't blame me if you don't understand it. You've already equated the synchronisation between the EU member states of the way they organise society to the idea that people make identical choices within that society.
Nicely put. Co-operation does not mean homogeneity. Imo there are global forces at work which require a level of co-operation between states never previously envisioned. Crime and terrorism are obvious examples, as are longer term issues such as the environment. Call me Dave knows this.....that's why he is scaremongering about the Calais 'Jungle' moving to Dover if we left the EU.:rotfl:
The problem we have is the EU seems toothless and inept against Putin etc....but is that an argument to leave or an argument to build it up?

your point about Yugoslvia was well made although my post was a bit flippant
I don't see the EU as a good model : a free market, free trade area where we are bound together by mutual advantge is fine but forced integration is more reminiscent of the lunacy of the Soviet empire and the madman Mao as it ignores the economics in favour of politics.

It might fit that bill under the doctrine of imposition, but I favour achieving it by agreement.
If you think of it as 'us' verses 'them', then it's probably your side that are the villains.
