Faulty shower screen/damage

We purchased a replacement curved bath and glass shower screen Dec14. It was fitted Jan15.

Over the wk end we heard an enormous crash and found the glass screen fallen over into the bath. The screen had completely come away from it's casement, i.e. it wasn't the fittings but the glass had come loose.

Luckily it didn't shatter but the weight of one of the corners has gouged a hole in the bath.

We hope to pursue with Wickes, anyone any words of wisdom?

Thanks in advance

Pursue it with Wickes and wait to see what they come up with.

I don't think there's much we can give you at this stage.

Ok thanks, was concerned they may say it's over 12month old etc. Have taken photographs and will take it from there...

Apologies, I missed that bit I thought it was Jan this year :o

I'm assuming there's no warranty left with it in which case you'll have to rely on your statutory rights (SOGA) to show that the shower screen was not of satisfactory quality. Still speak to Wickes first but they may ask you to prove that the fault fault is inherent to manufacture rather than a failure due to wear & tear or misuse.
  • Just wondered what other folks think.

The store manager visited and said whilst he couldn't accept liability he would offer us a replacement bath and shower screen, we would have to pay for fitting/replacement ourselves. Or he would pursue it with the manufacturer on our behalf for complete repair which obviously could take longer and need more investigations.... He admitted he expected to come and advise us it was a fitting problem but can see it doesn't appear to be.

We just wanted it done asap, and asked for referral to their own fitters. However they are booked solid for 4wks.

So now we are faced with seeking a plumber and paying for the removal of existing bath and replacement, which is such a hassle & I am now tempted to say pursue the manufacturer...

    Thanks in advance

when you bought it you were in 'contract' with wickes not the manufacture ..wickes should fit it free, they've admitted its their fault, push it a bit more.

Is the shower screen still under warranty?
Often things like that have a five year, or even ten year, guarantee.

If the warranty has expired, there really is no point in chasing the manufacturer - they owe you nothing.

As said above, Wickes must supply the remedy and cover all costs in doing so - Section 48B of The Sale of Goods Act.

Edited to add: I've just checked and every over bath screen that Wickes currently sell comes with a two year guarantee.

    Well worth checking your guarantee.
Having said that, guarantees often do not cover consequential loss - i.e. damage to your bath.

Edited to say, I've checked online and it does indeed have a 2yr guarantee...

However, on reflection we will just suck it up and request delivery of the shower screen & bath and try to employ a decent plumber. Too much of a can of worms....

Well as you earlier said (now deleted) you have no receipts or other paperwork, that might be your best option.

I do have receipts as it was bought online, i just didn't know how to check the guarantee as couldn't see it in the emails. But found it online..

however... it doesn't resolve the consequential loss so I guess we'll hunt for a plumber

Can you not fit it yourselves? My husband fit our shower and bath and he's not a plumber, plenty of YouTube videos which will help.
