Flight delay due to weather

My chartered flight from Miami to New York was cancelled due to the recent snow storm. American Airlines gave a free waiver, but it meant staying an additional two days with associated accommodation costs. Has anyone been able to claim money from a non EU airline because of flight cancellation due to the weather. Or should this be a travel insurance claim?

Non-EU so no claim under the EU regs. You can put in an insurance claim but the amounts due are likely to be modest.
