A way to watch old movies on TV - NOT online?

Turns out my 90-something year-old Grandmother on the brilliant and not at all selfish advice of my uncle, has been paying about £75 a month for a Sky subscription with broadband for the last 3 years.

She does not know how to use the internet, in fact she didn't even know she had it, and the only thing she watches on Sky TV is old movies. Nothing else, just old movies.

So, what I am looking for is a way for her to be able to watch old movies without a Sky subscription. Online is no good because she's got no concept of how to use the internet (let alone how to use it safely) and there are just too many buttons and settings involved. What she wants is an on/off button and a volume control - and the second one is optional.

Any ideas?

    Scrap Sky and use the cash to buy DVDs/Blu-Rays of the films she likes?
    I'm sure she'll be able learn to insert the disc and press Play…

    She could also save all the Sky money and just watch the free to air film channels like Film4 etc.

    Channels like film 4 and movie mix are good for old films. Also ITV 3 sometimes show films.

    Where is your grandmother?

    If she is in the London area, there are a couple of almost tailor-made free movie channels:
    • London Live, Freeview channel 8, shows a lot of Ealing Studios films from the 50's and 60's;
    • Talking Pictures, Freeview channel 81, shows a lot of 40's, 50's and 60's films.

    She would need a Freeview TV or Freeview adaptor. If she keeps her Sky box the channel numbers will be different.

    She doesn't need to purchase any additional equipment to see Free-To-Air channels. The Sky box (which she owns) will continue to provide these channels even if she cancels Sky. In addition, it's one less new thing she'll have to learn.
