  • To answer GwylimT's question, I've only been there 7months, but I started on the company books, not through agency.
Either the "quote" button on here doesn't work via smartphones or I don't know how to use it. If it does, please let me know, thanks.

If your employer does not have their own OH advisers then they can 'buy in' the service, i.e they pay for one to come in and perform the assessment.

Alternatively,in agreement with your employer you can contact Access to Work. They are a Government scheme, run via Job Centre Plus, who can arrange with you and your employer to come in and do an OHA and make recommendations regarding limitations and also any equipment that would make your job easier for you. Access to work may also be able to provide some of the funding for any specialist equipment so that you employer doesn't have topickupthe whole bill. This is however dependent on the sizeof the business and it's turnover/profits etc.

Check out the Access to Work information here.

In response to OldMotherTucker, you know the limitations of Lupus, so you can understand the situations that can occur at work. At present, I work 3 shifts myself, which is more than enough for anyone. All these advices have been helpful and food for thought. There has been talk of a compulsory 6 day a week rota, which I wouldnt want to be part of going forward. I already drive a 95 mile trip to work as it is! Before you ask, there are no decent paying jobs where I live and I'm in an IVA, so there's the punchline.
For now, I will go along with the external advice on disability at work, as suggested. The extra hrs doesn't if at all, officially come in til March, so I'm not sure hypothetically, what hr at work can do or forecast for now.

Similar circs to you:( Do you have a staff rep or personnel dept? I'd go and talk to them first - informally - just to find out what they are prepared to do . . I've been offered an individual contract because I can't do the long shifts any more. Same terms as everyone else but outside of the regular advertised shifts. My employers know that my Lupus has got considerably worse over the last few years and, so far, have provided me with the bits of special equipment that I've asked for.

I try not to be a PITA at work but my absenteeism atm is sky high!
  • Fortunately or unfortunately, depends how you look at it, I can get to the doctors/hospitals outside my shifts and they do allow you 4hrs out for appointments; something I've never had anywhere I've worked in the last 23yrs. I enjoy the job pursue, but just don't want to encourage a flare up working these type of hrs. My shift is very busy as it is.
There is a HR department, but they don't really handle wage queries effectively, let alone health issues.
That said, a leaflet was put into my contract about issues at work you can talk to someone about, whose not connected with work.
Has anyone heard of or know the reputation of WORKPLACE OPTIONS?
    Thanks.
