Long term disability when working

There isn't a proper forum for this topic, so I hope my question is ok here. I have a LTI and I work 40hr week, sometimes more.
My concern is my workplace will be coming into production soon and rumour has it that the hrs days might increase for demand. I work in big business company, but I wouldn't be able to work excess hrs of 50+ a week. Is there some recognisable disability documention that I could show my employers of my work limitations if I'm asked to do more hrs?
Thanks in advance.

I assume you are in the UK? If so european directives means you can't be forced to work more than 48 hours per week unless you agree to.
Does your employer have a human resources dept? if so maybe you could talk to them about any concerns.

You can be asked to work more than 48 hours, but you are welcome to say no. As someone with a disability your employer is required to make readonable adjustments for you to work, so again this could be applied to shift length.

How long have you been at your place of work?
  • I'm in the UK and we have an hr. I have outlined my medical health at the start, on my contract, I have Systemic Lupus. But as my stage doesn't involve a wheelchair or walking stick, I look fine. I will make an appointment with hr and explain the limitations of SLE, as it's not publicly known like some diseases.
    Thanks for your help.
  • Have you had an occupational health assessment, OP? If not, it might be worth asking for one to see what, if any, kind of help/support/limitations you need at work.

I used to be Starrystarrynight on MSE, before a log in technical glitch!
  • I've never had an OHA as I've never worked anywhere after I'd been diagnosed that had it onsite. I don't think such a thing is available where I work now. I think there would have to be a reason or an investigation going on, then they would bring one in. Do you know if it's possible to get to see one or someone similar via your doctor or Consultant? Certain conditions automatically get social workers or Healthcare practitioners assigned to them when they leave hospital or to help them into work. I never had that type of help going forward.

Equalities act! You employer has to offer you a reasonable alternative. If you declared your illness from the start they are obligated to make reasonable adjustments for your situation otherwise it can be classed as discriminatory or even constructive dismissal.

We're in consultation at the moment for a proposed shift pattern change that I physically cannot commit to, and my manager has told me, they cannot sack me because they took me on knowing full well I had Lupus.

We don't have occupational health on site either (small employer) but it is possible to access the local service - I had a medical locally and I know we sent someone else when they'd been off sick for a while.
Signature removed for peace of mind
  • The company I was working for used an 'off-site' company for occupational health. They phoned me and discussed my difficulties, etc, and then reported back to the company with their recommendations (agreed with me first). I believe a lot of smaller companies use this type of company for OH purposes. Good luck.
  • In response to OldMotherTucker, you know the limitations of Lupus, so you can understand the situations that can occur at work. At present, I work 3 shifts myself, which is more than enough for anyone. All these advices have been helpful and food for thought. There has been talk of a compulsory 6 day a week rota, which I wouldnt want to be part of going forward. I already drive a 95 mile trip to work as it is! Before you ask, there are no decent paying jobs where I live and I'm in an IVA, so there's the punchline.
For now, I will go along with the external advice on disability at work, as suggested. The extra hrs doesn't if at all, officially come in til March, so I'm not sure hypothetically, what hr at work can do or forecast for now.
  • Sorry, that should have said 95 mile round trip.
