Mobile upgrade due - iPhone 6s or s6 edge

Hi guys

I'm due an upgrade on my current mobile contract but really can't decide on the iPhone 6s or the Samsung S6 Edge. I've had iPhones for the last 6 years, so fancied a change but as I'm on 24 month contracts as a minimum i don't want to be stuck with a phone wishing I'd chose the other. Yes, it's down to personal opinion, but just wanted to get an opinion on the handset. Anyone here give pro's and cons.

My wife just upgraded to the IPhone 6s which looking at it, is a nice phone but apart from the new 3D technology there's not really much difference to the 5s I'm currently using. However having never experienced the Samsung I don't have an opinion on it, only from reviews I've read.

Thanks for any advice.

Yes I'm aware the S7 is due, (22nd Feb) however chances are they'll be quite expensive in terms of monthly bills.
  • I have both. The s6 edge is stunning looking and very quick, normally. It does have a memory issue and I often find over 80% of the ram used while doing nothing. This does effect using apps as they do freeze for several seconds. Very annoying when you are typing a message and have to wait up to 20 seconds before you can continue typing. I have to continually clean the memory with the Samsung widget thing.

Calls are equally good, I find apps better quality on the iPhone versions but then you can't load any apps not on the App Store, where as you can load them on the Samsung. the S6 screen is much better looking due to the resolution but the colour sometimes seems unnatural on the s6 edge.

The IR remote on the s6 edge is great and works very well. iPhone has nothing like it.

Side by side the 6s is faster in every way. The fingerprint sensor is much faster and more accurate on the 6s. It is however so fast that, if you generally briefly push the home button when locked to see the time then the phone will unlock. Happens all the time with my 6s, never with the s6 edge.

Camera on th s6 edge is amazing. Used both to take pics at my daughters wedding and the 6s didn't even come close. Also love the wireless charging on the edge, makes it so much simpler. the edges night clock is nice, and about the only thing I have really found the edge useful for to be honest.

Battery life on them both is good. But does seem to go down quicker on the s6 edge. For about the same amount of use today, my iPhone has 89% battery life while the s6 edge has 83%

All my opinions of course. The iPhone just works how you expect and does everything brilliantly. I do like the 3D Touch, it is actually useful and time saving in many cases.

The S6 edge looks stunning, both in form and screen, but I have to fight with it more in every way to get where I want with it.

Final note is, I loved android on my nexus 5, it was smooth, configurable, and worked. Samsung touch wiz is a pain to use in comparison so here, I would say IOS is the better interface as well.

I kept swapping between the 2 as I love how the S6 edge looks, it's a work of art. But I just like my stuff to work so tend to use the iPhone more.

I am getting a works phone shortly so one of mine will have to go, I can't carry 3 around. I will probably keep the iPhone 6s but I will miss the s6 edge, it is so beautiful.

Coming from someone who owns an iPhone 6s Plus I was sorely tempted by the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.

One feature that impressed me was the fact you can colour customise contacts of your choice. When the screen is face down you can see at a glance who is contacting you; then you can decide if you want to pick the phone up or ignore them, haha!

One criticism I have is reiterated above; for some reason Apple apply heavy noise reduction when shooting photos; you can produce some great results HOWEVER you do notice a 'softening' in the end result.

If you are happy with the 5s, why not keep it and go sim only - it's not compulsory to 'upgrade' you know!

The S6 Edge is still a gimmick and lacks a proper use for the sides. Stick it in a case as most people will and one side is likely to be hidden anyway.

Get the S6 its cheaper also.

  • Personally I think one big point against any iPhone is it locking to the carrier on first sim unless bought from Apple (or apparently GiffGaff). I find being able to put a local sim in my Galaxy a big plus.

The iPhone 6S has Apple pay which is quite handy which might be a deciding factor for you - there has been talk of android pay but so far nothing in the UK that I'm aware of

I certainly can pay with my 3 year old Sony using NFC in places that accept contactless payments.
