Is there a limit to how much security checks credit card companies can make you do?

I just tried to use a Halifax card to reserve cinema tickets online at vue. Because I had a voucher there was nothing to pay but you have to give the card details to pick up the tickets.
Halifax's verification system required me to go through their verification procedure, entering my date of birth and card expiry date and three digit number (again). Although I entered these correctly the transaction was refused. So I used another card.
A little later Halifax text me and phone me up requiring me to go through another security procedure to confirm that I did indeed try to make the transaction, so I have to do that.
All this when I wasn't even spending any money. I'm sick of this. It happens so often. Is there any limit on how much of this they can ask for? I mean ultimately they could ask you to fill out pages of details all to "protect yourself" every time you want to use your card online. Really of course it's them who are being protected by it not you. I suppose I do have the option of using a different card so perhaps should just do that.

There's no limit to how many checks they can implement.0

No, if you don't like the level of security then find a card provider who does less, but don't come moaning on here when fraudsters take all your money.0

Not a dig at you chomeur but there was a thread in the last couple of days with someone saying how a lloyds don't care about the security of their customers money, so it does seem that they can't win!
Was it the visa verification box that pops up when you make a purchase? Are you sure you registered correctly first time? There are a few variations but some make you create an account and come up with passwords and the like, some ask for your address, I had one (can't remember which account now...) that always rejected as it didn't like my address format, it was so annoying. I don't live on a road, it's a house name, village, small nearish town, county, postcode. I don't have a street, yet they wanted it and I couldn't put it in, I am sure they had the village as the street and the town as the town, but nope the verification part was rubbish so I stopped using it.
Give them a call and ask what information they need and what they don't like, it's their verification system. All these checks can be annoying but we would all be moaning a lot more if we found our money was missing - there is a problem brewing with Tesco credit cards and possibly purchases made through purchases at tesco and information being stolen, there is a thread on these boards about it, maybe they should have done extra security checks!
Hope you find the problem and a solution0 -

Agreed, but I said it to make a point rather than be strictly accurate.

The whole point of this exercise is providing proof of ID,
so it was never going to be hassle free.
One of these days, your own house will not let you in the house because you have a cold, so voice recognition doesn't work, but a burglar with a cheap voice recording will.0 -
It's only the OPs money when they borrow it.
Otherwise, its between the fraudster and the issuer. No, if you don't like the level of security then find a card provider who does less, but don't come moaning on here when fraudsters take all your money. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Yes, that's where the problems seem to occur. Sometimes they just fail. In this case it asked me for information that I had already entered in the stage before so wasn't adding any extra security. Plus if the transaction has no value I shouldn't really care if someone uses my card details should I?0 -

I can't remember which card does it but I will pay for something, then he visa verification box pops up and asks me for the account number, expiry date, name as it is on the card and 3 digit code, exactly the same as I had just entered. I know I have to do it but do wonder why, by all means ask me for my inside leg measurement or my dogs birthday but they know I know all the above stuff as I just tried to make a purchase.
Very strange. Other cards it asks for address and more information, it's tiresome but at least it does seem to be adding a level of security rather than just try into annoy me!0
