The single RAM bank on your nc20 with a maximum capacity of 2GB may rule out Windows for the OP. Windows 10 uses a lot of caching to speed up startups which requires lots of RAM

I have just 4GB ram on my laptop (max possible) and windows 10 is using 2.3GB just for this browser.

Linux is probably the best option for this aging low spec netbook

My Novatech Laptop is nearly 2 years old, it's a 15.6 Nspire Pega Family (following SIW).
So I would have to update my bios before doing anything. Or is it fine with Linux, as long as I don't upgrade to windows 10?
    Doubt it needs bios update.
Similar to my other lappy , nspire see below, can't check now on ipad at the bar. But mine is an i5 17" but have never had to do any upgrades to it at all and it runs fine W10 (upgraded from W7 inplace) , and also boots Fedora 22 and Mint i.e. Tri-boot.

    EDITED mine is Novatech nSpire N1727 - 17" Intel i5 4200 Mobile Processor - 8GB DDR3 Memory - 1TB Hybrid Drive - DVD Writer - Intel HM87 Chipset

The OP has said that their motivation is to avoid Windows 10; therefore it has already been ruled out.

Windows 10 (like Windows 8.1) is fine on 2GB of RAM - it's usable even on 1GB. You may be gaining a little speed from it using more RAM, but I suspect not a vast amount.

    With suboptimal results...

... I didn't upgrade the Bios or anything else on it, so maybe it's a good idea to upgrade a few thing first of all before installing Linux.

I'd definitely check for a BIOS update before moving to Linux. It's usually best to have the latest version and flashing CMOS settings isn't nearly as risky as it once was.

Then try out a few different distros, one after the other (if you have the time and patience). Then pick the one you like best (or the one that you find easiest to use, etc.)

In my opinion the three best Linux distros currently for a netbook are
    Linux Mint 17.3 xfce 32 bit http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php
    LXLE 14.04.3 32 bit http://www.lxle.net/
    Zorin OS 9 lite http://zorinos.com/download9.html
