Flight Delay Compensation Rejection from KLM

Hi
I'm hoping someone can help. My family were
travelling from Glasgow, Scotland via Amsterdam to Portland, USA on Friday
9th October 2015 (last year) with KLM. The Glasgow
departure at 6.05 in the morning was delayed for over an hour due to an operational problem, meaning we missed our connection at Amsterdam to Portland. We were rerouted to Seattle, then Portland eventually arriving
11 hours late.
We booked with KLM because we wanted
the trip to be on the one ticket and have our
luggage checked in right through from Glasgow to Portland.
KLM say that we are not due flight delay compensation because:
"according to the recent decision of the Court of Justice of the European Union, a passenger can be entitled to compensation when the passenger arrives at its final destination with more than 3 hours delay because of a missed connection. Relevant in that case was that both flights were operated by the same carrier. Since your connecting flight was operated by Delta Airlines flight DL179, no compensation is due on this occasion."
They sell this flight (a codeshare with Delta airlines) who are also part of their Skyteam, daily.
I just wondered if anyone else had encountered similar problem. Any advice
appreciated.
Linda
