Of course they can void it if its part of their terms and conditions .
But my guess is that the engineer would not even notice .

You'd have had to be a magician to connect my washing machine to the socket it is plugged into without removing the moulded plug and replacing it with a non-moulded one, so if an engineer came and didn't notice I'd be a bit worried about their capability. Whether they would care or comment is an entirely different matter.

Course they can. A warranty goes above and beyond your statutory rights so they can stipulate what criteria you have to meet.

Yes they can. It's no different to a manufacturer stating that in the event of a warranty claim, the goods must be returned in their original packing or that they must be sent at the consumers cost to a repair centre in a different country to that in which it was originally purchased.
Because manufacturers or retailers do not have to offer a warranty, when they do so they can have terms and conditions that would be illegal if they stipulated those same terms when a consumer was attempting to enforce their statutory rights under the SOGA, Consumer rights act or Consumer contract regulations.

Going through the manual I noticed something I hadn't seen previously, that basically states if you cut the plug off then the warranty is void.

Could you give the exact model number of your appliance.
The reason I ask is that this is what is stated in an old Hotpoint manual that I have:
    Removing the plug:
If your appliance has a non-rewireable
moulded plug and you should wish to re-route
the mains cable through partitions, units etc.,
    please ensure that either:
the plug is replaced by a fused 13 ampere
rewireable plug bearing the BSI mark of
    approval.
    or:
the mains cable is wired directly into a 13
amp cable outlet, controlled by a switch, (in
compliance with BS 5733) which is accessible
    without moving the appliance
    .

How can they void a warrant just because the plug has been cut off?
They can void a warranty for any reason they choose so long as it's in their T&Cs.

It can easily be done without removing the moulded plug, but I say that Hotpoint would be most unreasonable to insist that it shouldn't,

I took the time to download a Hotpoint washing manual and it was worded the same as Shaun from Africa's. I would also like to know the model number.

Its the hotpoint WMXTF 942 EXTRA.

The wording says "the guarantee does not cover:

Replacement of any consumable item or accessory. These include but are not limited to: plugs, cables, batteries, light bulbs, "

    Etc.

That certainly doesn't mean that the warranty is voided, just get them out to do the repair. Unfortunately they are very busy at the moment though.
