Hi there my son booked a ticket via Student Universe from Leeds to San Diego via Heathrow on the way there and back via Phiadelphia and Heathrow and flies at the end of this month.
The outward journey is booked with BA to Heathrow but the flight from there to San Diego is via Finnair.
The return flight is via American airlines to Philadelphia and the flights from there to Heathrow and Leeds are with BA.
he is travelling on his own for a week to visit a friend and booked the tickets himself but got a good price I think at £440.
As the extent of my flight booking experience is to and from Europe with carry on luggage I am struggling to find out what luggage allowance he has.
When i put his booking reference into BA for example and click on additional services there is nothing under extra baggage and meals. Does this mean he has no extra baggage on top of an already allocated allowance (considering that this must be the cheapest economy ticket there is) or that he can only take on hand luggage? Does this mean he will have an 11 hours flight with no meals? Also do i go by the BA luggage allowances or the Finnair ones? Sorry but I'm really panicking!

It's the BA luggage allowance (though I'd be shocked if it's any different to American Airlines or Finnair - 1 bag at 23kg) and the meals are whatever the carrier normally provides.
He will not be flying with Finnair at any point, just BA and AA.0 -
Hi thanks for the reply. So his flight from heathrow to San diego is with BA but flying on a Finnair flight?0

Leeds to Heathrow, Heathrow to San Diego and Heathrow to Leeds is on BA.
San Diego to Philadelphia is on American Airlines.
Philadelphia to Heathrow is either on BA or AA, it depends what the flight number is.
(With regards to meals, there will be no meal on the San Diego to Philadelphia flight, but there will be to Heathrow regardless of which carrier it is)0 -
Baggage allowance is almost always determined by the operating carrier (there are a few odd exceptions, but they won't apply here).
As mentioned above, Heathrow-San Diego is operated by BA, just sold as a codeshare with a Finnair flight number.
BA checked baggage policy to the USA in economy (or World Traveller as they call it) is 1 bag per person, max 23kg. This will apply regardless of how cheap the ticket is.
AA has the same checked baggage policy for transatlantic flights in economy, the only thing he should check is whether he has checked baggage included for the San Diego - Philadelphia sector. It may well be included if he is connecting directly to a transatlantic flight home on the same ticket, but as the AA domestic flight policy is that you pay for checked bags, it's worth double-checking.
BA and AA have slightly different hand luggage allowances, BA allows a slightly larger main piece, AA a bit more flexible on the size of the smaller piece (the "personal item"). AA's enforcement of the size allowances on the larger piece can be patchy, but probably better to use the AA size to be on the safe side.
Food-wise, there will definitely be meals included on the transatlantic sectors. There will not be any food included on San Diego - Philadeplhia, you have to buy food in AA domestic economy.0 -
thank you both so much for your help0

A couple of legs of a trip I did had domestic AA sectors (preceeding and following transatlantic legs) and both times we had to pay for baggage at check-in. We were expecting this but I can't remember how we knew - it was maybe indicated on the booking. All I know is that it didn't come as a nasty surprise. It's not ridiculously expensive but definitely worth checking.0 -

Well you shouldn't pay if you're connecting to/from a transatlantic flight on the same day. If you do need to pay it's $25.0
