BT fibre cabinet.

This is a question just out of curiosity.:)

Much to my surprise a "fibre" cabinet has been installed adjacent to my existing cabinet. Superfast Staffordshire using BT as the contractor.
It's at the connection stage.

However, the question is regarding the old cabinet. It's been removed leaving only the new cabinet. Is this the usual procedure?

All the existing wiring/connections, I would assume, have been moved to the new cabinet very quickly and covertly without affecting anyone's broadband and/or 'phone.
I was under the, possibly wrong, impression that the old cabinet remained alongside the new.

Have you got a picture of it? Are you sure it's a new fibre cabinet and not just a replacement of the old PCP?

    Does it have vents?

If you pop up your postcode I can check for you. Or, if you don't want to give that out but know what exchange you're served from, and what cabinet number you're on, I can check that too. Postcode it most accurate though as you may think you're on a cabinet that is closest but that isn't always the case.
  • Thanks.
Yes, definitely fibre cabinet(I asked the contractors during it's installation), with a newly installed mains power supply, newly laid fibre optic and vents. Twice the size of the old one.
    ST10 4NE, cabinet 1.
Checked with postcode and 'phone number on BT OR's "where and when" and as I posted, now indicating at "connection" stage. Just changed from "build". States fibre available within four months.
  • You are correct normally....

This could be one of the new "all in ones" Combined PCP cab and fibre DSLAM in one combined cabinet.
Maybe the old cab was defective, too small to hold the splice blocks to tie in the existing lines to the separate fibre cabs or whatever other reason....

See near the end of this page for a photo.

Are you sure the cabinet that disappeared was your PCP cabinet? It's not unusual that some PCP cabinets are empty as all the connections have been shifted to another nearby cabinet... maybe something hiding behind a wall?

It's also possible you were on an exchange-only line.

https://www.btwholesale.com/includes/adsl/main.html will indicate your PCP cabinet and some other handy info.

BT link confirms what I've already posted, "served by Cabinet 1". No, definitely not an exchange only line. Not unless the whole village is connected directly!
Looks like an "all in one" and exactly like the last picture. Single vent, lower left, Even the yellow voltage warning triangle is in the same place. That could well be the explanation as to why the old cabinet has gone.
Somebody was working in the old cabinet last December, soon after the new cabinet was installed and it really did look an absolute mess, just one big clump of wires. So maybe not that covertly and not the usual procedure.:p
    Thanks to all who answered.

If you go to street view at the corner of church Lane and Uttoxeter Road the old cab. can be seen against the wall. The new cab. is to the right of that, against the wall, behind the green rubbish bin.
I'll try and post a pic. in a couple of days of the new cab. and how it is now. Probably one of those "rare" all in ones.

    Ah that is interesting!
That is a secondary SCP cab
    Not a primary PCP.
To explain - in some areas where there are large groups of houses situate a long distance from the PCP rather than run the cable out to each one with joint boxes en-route to split out the connections..... BT run a single 100pair cable out to a further centralised secondary surface mounted "joint box" near to the house group - called a SCP ie a child of the main PCP. Then the cables to the local houses run out from the SCP.
Sometimes these are cabinets/boxes sometimes they are short grey coloured street pillars: all are small.
There maybe several child SCP's to a main PCP.

The clue is that it has two numbers on the front separated by the 'slash' which tells you which SCP it is and controlled by which PCP.
Here you are SCP no 2 fed from PCP No 1

So it looks like BT have converted a SCP into a full PCP status and at the same time made it fibre rated.
They have done this by making it a new all-in-one
All makes sense now and eminently sensible by BT - there's a thought!

Chances are you are too far away from the main PCP to get a superfast service from it.
