MSE collective switch

Hi, does anyone know if the British gas collective switch tariffs include VAT or not? Can't seem to find the answer on the info section.
Many thanks

the "i" icon on the MSE comparison site says prices are inc VAT

I'd take a screenshot for evidence though as I'm sure my OVO rates were showing cheaper than I'm paying

    Hi HATTERS81,

All the figures shown on our site include VAT at 5% so that our users get a full market comparison!

    Hi Dird,

The rates that Ovo shows on its bills often exclude the 5% VAT so if you multiply the rates by 1.05 you should be seeing the same figures as we display on the site.

It's something we've raised with Ofgem as we agree it can be confusing!

It's probably more to do with HMRC than Ofgem.

I agree you should be showing costs including VAT.

But I think HMRC say (except for certain specific situations like retail stores), an invoice should show the VAT seperately. i.e the cost excluding the VAT + the VAT = the total.
  • Hasn't the npower fixed energy online March 2017 already beaten this MSE4 British gas tariff?

Hi there - average price of the nPower tariff is £781.16, £37 more expensive than the British Gas tariff.

But as always, worth doing a personalised comparison before choosing what to switch to as the BG tariff can be beaten for some regions / usage types.
  • Thanks both. But the npower one is £71 cheaper for me, in greater London, and has just £40 exit fees (BG is £60!!) and lasts an extra month. Maybe the BG deal is being pushed too hard, given that average figures can mask big differences.

But Ive only just switched to OVO via CEC, how many times a year does Martin expect us to switch?
  • I took the deal and got my first email from British Gas today.

They quote the same usage figures as I input into the tool giving an annual usage of around £750.

To me this equates to a DD of £63 a month but British Gas want £100, whats going on?
