But the tatty dressing has to be the right sort: good quality things which were more on the classic side than the high fashion when they were new a few decades ago.

You don't need a posh friend, unless you want to go into the Steward's Enclosure. Members of the public can buy a ticket for the Regatta Enclosure.

If you want to go into the Steward's Enclosure, you need a Member to invite you as their Guest. Few would do so, unless they know you personally. But you might find one or two who would consider it if they were generously minded, and you explained your interest in the rowing, your understanding of the dress code, and perhaps offered to do something for them in return.
