New car Registration

Afternoon all,

I take delivery of my Golf R on the 1st of March but was in two minds about buying a private '16' reg or leaving it and getting a stock one from the dealer.

From experience are you allowed to choose the reg from a list set by the DVLA or are they just automatically assigned to the vehicle?

Thanks

James

Same here, last time I bought a new car (2005) the dealership had a list of 20 or so I could pick from. So I took the one with my initials on it :)

I presume the dealer has a certain block pre-booked from the local DVLA office.

In 1994, the dealer showed me a handwritten list in a notebook in the sales manager's desk. In 2011 it was a spreadsheet. First time, I took the one with the roundest number; second time I took the most interesting letters.
I need to think of something new here...

Dealers are usually issued with a "block" of registrations which they can use. You are normally given the chance to pick from that list, but you can't request a specific number - unless you want to buy a private registration.

Think I had the choice of 3 with mine!

If you want a private plate just look at the Tx16 XXX range assuming you don't want something silly involving illegal manipulation of letters

Apparently anything that is rude that would work with xB16 (i.e. BIG) is banned like AB16 TIT or DIC, same as they did for BL0x XXX to stop BL01 JOB etc

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Have you considered buying a dateless plate and to hell with all this nonsense of having a new 'year code' every 6 months.

Dateless plates start at around £29.00

A dateless plate doesn't have the latest style year indicator numbers, nor do they have the year letter at the beginning or end as they had from 1963 onwards on mainland Great Britain so they can be fitted to any age of car - new or old. i.e a pre 1963 number-plate.

But you can put on a dated plate on any car as long as the plate is not newer than the car

Likewise any plate from Northern Ireland will be dateless as they have never had year indicators there.

E-Bay will give you all the prices - some are of course eye-watering - others are as cheap as chips.

There is an £80 transfer fee - so that is not going to be included in a £29 deal.

Have you considered not giving a toss what plate the car has on it? Much easier and cheaper.
