CC account closed & paid off but 2 months later still active???

Hi - After a dispute with my CC company, I paid off the balance & instructed them 4 times to close the account. This was confirmed over the phone. About six weeks later an automatic payment (Ebay) & a Paypal transfer were made to this CC & were paid. CC company admit to not closing account, even after telling me they had & making me pay off balance. These two payments should never have cleared & then would have come off secondary account according to Paypal. Am I liable for payments on an account that had been closed for over 6 weeks???

Yes, because the account wasn't closed.

Next time you want an account closed and if you are doing it over the phone, request it in writing.

you are responsible for payments that you have clearly authorised.

Payment taken from the CC or money transferred to it?

Closing a CC account doesn't stop CPAs and pre-authorised payments. For the latter you have a right to request a chargeback if it took the company more than 6 months to collect it, but you are still liable for what you owe to the company.

You can never really close an account, they will continue to pay any recurring payments and yes you are liable for them. The account will stay active until the expiry date on the card.

All the answers you were given were correct from what I can see. CPAs will always go through.

Well done on getting the transactions reversed though. Make sure that this doesn't leave you with unpaid fees you need to pay another way though.

    Well done for persevering!

Is the CC company taking the hit on the £300, or have they processed chargebacks to Ebay and PayPal?

If they did chargebacks, you need to check what PayPal will do now. Normally, PayPal would take the money back from whoever you paid - and that person might now think you're scamming them.

(It's a popular scam on PayPal to pay for goods, then do a chargeback after the goods are delivered.)

Similarly, if the CC company did a chargeback to Ebay, I guess Ebay might suspend your account.
