Lost Luggage EasyJet

Hello. I'm hoping for some advice please.

We were travelling with easyjet at Christmas. On our outbound flight, one of our cases did not arrive at our destination. We reported this at the airport. We phoned several times, sent a list of the items we thought were in our case and sent a picture of the case, which had quite a distinctive pattern. We were informed after 21 days that the case was irretrievably lost.

We tallied up how much it would cost to replace all the items and the total came to £710.96. easyjet have offered us £250. We were not offered any compensation for being without items on our holiday (although we didn't need new items as we had one of our cases and our toiletries were in that case).

Although I understand they claim to not have to offer to buy new items for old, I am quite annoyed, as obviously I did not choose to lose my property and would need to replace the items and so incur a maximum of £710.96 (I could, I suppose buy some things second hand which would lower the figure).

As it was Christmas, many of the items were brand new and were Christmas gifts received. easyjet say we must provide them with receipts. Obviously we don't have receipts for presents received, or for our older items. Annoyingly, some of our receipts for Christmas presents we bought were actually in this suitcase (I kid you not!).

Do people think we should just accept £250? Can we appeal?
I'm a bit fed up of the whole fiasco, to be honest. Maybe that's what the airlines hope for...

Sorry to hear that, but look at it from the airline's POV. You can't prove or back up what was in your case with receipts, which is unfortunate and frustrating, but they have to take a pragmatic view over a figure for settlement.

I've previously worked in airport customer services and believe me, in cases of loss, we were led to believe that almost EVERY bag is Prada, every watch is Rolex and every item of clothing is designer - yet strangely not many have the receipts or card statements to support a claim. No one who flies shops at Primark.

Not for one moment saying that you've inflated the value of your items, but there are those that do and it's set a precedence for the rest. I think you'll just have to accept. Sorry.
  • Think you might need to claim on your travel insurance but without receipts or evidence of ownership (photographs etc) it's going to be hard
  • If you can't prove what was in your case then you can really expect to be able to claim much for it. They didn't offer compensation for being without items on holiday because you weren't, so didn't submit receipts and claim it back (up to Easyjets limit).

You can also claim via your travel insurance, but again, without receipts or proof what was in the case you may well struggle.

my ex lost a bag coming back from attending a wedding in new york, so it contained her dress and my suit and lots of clothes, and the on thing she moaned about the most, her ghd.

anyway it took months for virgin to accept it was lost and then they paid a tiny fraction of what the contents was worth, so the rest was claimed on insurance.

you may find, as is the case with virgin, that they have a maxinum value of a bag and this is another reason to have travel insurance to cover the short fall

Maximum of 1131 SDR (SDR = Special Drawing Rights, 1 SDR = 0.96 GBP)
  • Thank you for all your responses. We submitted bank statements, photos and any invoices we had and our offer was slightly improved. Lesson learnt: keep all receipts and buy travel insurance for every trip!
