Problems with Mozilla Firefox.

Options
I've started using Mozillla Firefox in view of the fact Google Chrome are soon going to stop providing updates.
However, I'm finding that webpages on Firefox run very slow at times and even freeze, and sometimes I get a warning about unresponsive script. I thought it might have had something to do with Java script, but on checking my programmes this is no longer part of my software.
I would be grateful for any suggested solutions to the problem.
Thank you.

I've noticed since the most recent 44.0 update, FireFox has become very unresponsive at times - particularly when working with multiple tabs and/or several different windows.

May be a case of waiting a few days for a fix.

When I click on Google Chrome web browser now I get.....

"This computer will soon stop receiving Google Chrome updates because Windows XP and Windows Vista will no longer be supported".

I have a Vista OS. I thought I would try and get used to Firefox, but much prefer Chrome. Hope you're right Tropez and a fix for Firefox will soon follow.

If you're not liking Firefox, you could try Opera.

    It's Chrome-like.

Or if you're feeling adventurous, you could try Yandex browser.

Try going onto the FF beta update channel, that way you get fixes more quickly. I'm on 45.0b1.

sometimes I find that going to tools/options/advanced and clearing the 'cached web content' clears the slowdowns for a while

Java and Java script are two completely different things even though they say Java, Java script is run by your browser and has nothing to do with Oracle Java.

What OS are you using, Vista or XP ?

If it's the latter then upgrade the OS to something supported.
Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.

I'm not sure why Firefox would be running slowly, but... in case you're interested, Java and Javascript are completely different things.

Java is something that you need to install. It's a programming language that can be used by programs on your PC and by websites. It was designed as a platform-independent language.

In the late 90s to early 00s, this made Java "the next big thing", but it has so many security vulnerabilities that it's fallen out of favour. Very few programs or websites require it, and unless you have a good reason, it's best to uninstall it from your PC.

Javascript is a scripting language that is built-in to all major web browsers. You cannot uninstall it if you have a Javascript-enabled browser installed. It is heavily relied upon for many common website features (such as the ability to log in to a user account -- like you do here on MSE). It can be disabled if required, but most popular websites would no longer function.

Firefox add-ons such as NoScript and RequestPolicy give you manual control over which sites are allowed to run scripts on your PC. But they are more for control-freaks (like me!). They'd probably drive an "everyday, non-techie user" to insanity.

Firefox is my preferred browser, but it started having problems with (unresponsive) scripts years ago - either because of some websites' 'improvements' or because of 'improvements' in FF itself.
The same websites are much better or fine in Chrome.

    betbrain.com, matchbook.com, netbet.com - to name a few.

W7 here, and I do usually have 2-3 FF windows with multiple tabs each opened.

Another problem is that FF becomes 'laggy' even at just 20-30% of the CPU load. I blame Windows for this.
