Minimum Wage HELP

I am currently employed full time and self employed. I make a very good wage self employed, and am more than happy with that extra income. But my problem is: I'm employed full time at £6.95 per hour (I am 21) as a Supervisor & Key Holder. Now the minimum wage/living wage is going up to £7.20 for people aged 25&over. My problem with this is that I don't think my manager/director has any intention of 'upping' my wage when that happens, but that would then mean there are general shop assistants under myself, who have worked at the company for far less time, earning more money that me, without the worries, stress and responsibilities that I have. How do I go about asking my manager and explaining the above to him without sounding as if I only care about money and possibly cause some hard feeling? It's not actually the money it's the principle. What do you think I should ask for as well, I don't want to be greedy, I want it to be fair, and sit well with me. Any help, suggestions etc would be greatly appreciated! :(

When the Minimum wage rises, your wage will rise automatically.

If you feel to deserve more, ask for me, but justify it (it sounds like you can with extra responsibilities)

From April 2016, the national living wage will be £7.20 an hour for workers aged 25 and older. The minimum wage will still apply for workers aged 24 and under.

The current National Minimum Wage for 21 year olds and over is £6.70. You are earning £6.95 per hour, so above NMW, I would imagine your boss would probably use that excuse not to give you a payrise. If you do go to him asking for a rise, you would need to highlight any areas of extra responsibility where you feel you deserve the extra 25p (or more) per hour.

  • thank you. But my wage remains above minimum wage, but below the 25 threshold, that's what I don't think is fair. I will have to bite the bullet and have a chat, but it scares me, it's a small comapny, and I don't want to rock the boat!

It all boils down to what do you think you are worth. If your company values you, they'll give you an increase. If not, then you either look for a new job elsewhere who will pay you more, or keep quiet and stick with your job knowing they are getting a keyholder/supervisor at a bargain price without having to pay someone new to train up to your level.

OP's wage will not rise automatically because they already earn over their respective minimum.

Have you asked whether you will be receiving a rise OP? The new increase causes problems for employers and workers, they're going to be paying some people more than their job warrants and others such as yourself less because there is no more spare budget.

Is there any career development, experience or training that you want that the company can provide? If they are cash strapped they might be happy to negotiate for a manager job title and things which will stand you in good stead in your fuure career rather than more cash now.
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.

Op, can you verify that your self employment is a different job than you are asking about or is it the same one?
  • It's different. I have a full time 9-5 job and I'm also self employed, and do extra work in my spare time. They are completely separate. :)

There are plenty of people who supervise others earning more than them. If you don't think your boss will listen to a reasoned argument for an increase and you claim to be making a lot of money from your self employment why not pack in the employed job and concentrate your efforts on that?

Until you are certain that your employer won't increase your wage to above the Living Wage minimum aren't you worrying un-necessarily?
